Does the compensator do anything to reduce recoil, or is it mostly for looks?

Had a friend send this to me in an e-mail. I honestly don't remember ever seeing it before, even did a search and didn't find it in the first page or two of posts that showed up. Oh well, it probably won't be my only duplicate posting.
