BBQ Guns

Bingo. I grew up in Texas, and I don't get it either. I guess this is part of a particular subculture. When I go to a BBQ, I go for the BBQ, not to look at flashy guns. Actually, flashy guns are not my thing at all. I prefer them to be inconspicuous and utilitarian.

Truth be told, it is more more of a South/Western Texas thing. A matter of scale, too--think cooking entire steers, not a brisket and a couple links of sausage. The kind of thing, where, when you get to the gate to the spread, there's another couple miles' driving to get to where the food is cooking. The kind of operation that measures their land by the section; acres are reserved for defining the non-ag-exempt buiding footprints.

Kind of place where the owners always go armed, but, since company is coming, put on their "pretty" rigs and arms.

It dovetails into the "court gun" mythos, too, as a number of the people who host these sorts of events were (or are) in LE or the Court side of things. So, they had access to "trusty made" leatherwork, or gifts from grateful folks on and near the Border.

It's also part of the restrictions Texas has on open carry, too.
