Anyone here know of a source for these in CONUS? They're available all over Canada, but so far I haven't had any luck finding them in the Lower 48. They're made by a company called TruFlare, but truflareusa.com lists them as not available.

BearBangers are pen-lauched flare type cartridges that are basically mini bird bombs. They seem to be pretty widely used on several continents to encourage overly curious carnivores to go be curious somewhere else, and they seem to be reasonably effective.

Any first hand reports pro or con, and further info as to sources or similar products, would be appreciated.

haven't heard of them. . . . .

but I would strongly encourage anyone thinking about launching a flare in our tinder dry southwestern forests to reconsider the idea. It's been 5 years since the Rodeo-Chediski fire here in Arizona and some of that country still looks like the face of the moon.

Tru-Flare BearBangers Prevent Forest Fires

Bear-Bangers are now available from TruFlareUSA.com as well as a some other online vendors and camping stores in the USA.

Unlike marine flares, Tru-Flare brand flares are designed to fly high above the tree-tops and and then extinguish themselves before descending.:)

Many years ago, I bought some 12 ga. shells that had something like an M80 firecracker in them, basically propelled and ignited by the primer and maybe a tiny powder charge. They'd go a couple hundred feet before they went off, lots of fun!

Anything like that? Are those things still available?

Blue Sky,

Welcome to THR. Thanks for the clarification. Stick around, lots of good folks here. :)

Just don't shoot them at the bear...the classic bear banger story involves shooting it past the bear and driving it towards you!

A good bearbanger is a S&W 500. The last thing I want to do is tick off a bear with a pen launched flare.

Glad these are finally available here in the states. I was looking for them a couple years ago prior to a trip through bear (and other critter) country, in places where firearms might be an issue. Fortunately we managed to get along with no difficulties.

Thanks for the update,
