i decided i want to get a .22 lr semi-automatic pistol. I just want something to carry and i am not concerned about a bigger caliber. I want a decent looking pistol, that has high reliability, good accuracy, and has a high magazine capacity of at least 15.

A Walther PPK is most likely the best rimfire defense pistol on the market.
High quality, hard to find, and expensive when you do.

I assume this is to be a defensive sidearm against human attack?

I am unable to recall any .22 rimfire pistols with such high capacity. The Ruger .22s (Mark III or 22/45) hold 10 rounds and are reliable and accurate; one of these with no more than a 4.5" barrel should meet your needs size-wise -- if not caliber-wise. ;)

oh k i was just hoping to get a cheap lil .22 for $100 that had like 15 rounds, but in the case that i can't i can get a hi-point for $100 with a standard 8 round magazine + 10 rounds magazines are available. my friend has been tellnig me about the hi-points he has a .45 and a 9mm and they both feed +p hp's(gold dots)all day. so i guess i'll just get the hi-point. thx for ur opinions and help. if anyone finds a cheap gun with more then 12 rounds tell me plz.(especially one that looks better then a hi-point :p)

'bout the only thing I'd consider in that price range is the Pheonix HP-22. They run about $115 and are decent, but will show significant wear on the alloy components after a few thousand rounds. I have one with both the 3" and 5" barrels and it is a fun little gun, but I wouldn't trust my life to it. After about 2 bricks, the slide-mounted safety started engaging during firing, so I superglued it "off". I also diasbled the mag safety. I consider the HP-22 a plinker.

If you want a quality rimfire mousegun, I'd go with the Beretta Bobcat. But .25 ACP will be more reliable than .22 LR.

what other kind of calibers are made with atleast a 12 round capacity that are cheap!!!

For a new gun, the bottom line for one you can trust your life with is about $250-$300 for the little Kel-Tec's or Taurus PT-111. They are both 10+1 9mm's. IIRC, the only compacts with 12 or more round capacity are the Beretta 9000S 9mm (12+1) or 84FS/Browning BDA .380 (13+1). 9000S will be ~$400, 84 FS over $500. There may be a couple other hi-cap compacts, but they won't be any cheaper.

Below Mouse Gun allert!!!!!!!!!!!

What are you planning on defending yourself against? Small vermain???

Friends dont let friends carry carry Sub- Mouse gun calibers, I dont know you but I still care. Please some 380 guy talk him out of a .22!!!! I am a 9mm/.38 min. guy.

Spend a couple 100 bucks and get a 9mm P-11 keltec or a 380 KT You don't need 10+ rounds for SD . If you do should have brought a AR -15 or a few marines.

Almost nobody will tell you to carry a .22 if it is at all possible for you to carry a larger caliber.

I don't know where you are, but Bersa .380 pistols (kind of like the Walther PPK), go for $200 or so at Academy Sporting Goods. Here's a rewiew of them: http://www.gunblast.com/Bersa_Thunder380.htm

The Kel-Tec, as mentioned above, comes in the widely-available, sufficiently powerful, and very affordable 9mm round, and can be had in the low $200s new.

The Hi-Points get a lot of debate: some say they're a good buy for the $, others say they're junk. 99% of people would agree that they're too bulky for comfortable concealed carry.

Avoid the following brands like the plague: Bryco, Jennings, Raven, Phoenix, Jimenez, RG, etc. Total junk, not worth $50.

Look at it this way: even a halfway decent gun will last for decades. Unless you're living out of your car, you really want to spend the $200 or so for something decent.

You might even be able to find a good Taurus or Rossi snubby revolver for $150 or so. Solid steel and durable, if not fancy. Read the sticky at the top of the Revolver forum to learn how to check out used revolvers.

If you're going to trust your life to it, a) don't buy .22, that round is for shooting paper or squirrels b) don't buy junk. $200 isn't that much money compared to $119+tax. Knock back a few fewer beers for a month, or go a month without cable, and you'll be very glad that you bought something decent.

Good luck. Stay smart, stay safe,

FWIW:

IF I were going to carry a 22cal pistol for protection it would be my Firestorm FS22. I think I paid $228 otd, and it is amazingly accurate and extremely reliable with modern high velocity ammo..

I use mine when my bride and I are out cruising the country roads on our golf cart for feral beer cans.. It's DEADLY against non-aggressive feral beer cans. Haven't run into the "dreaded AGGRESSIVE" feral beer can yet.. (But I keep a'searching).:D

Personally even tho I'm well pleased with my FS22 I simply don't want a rimfire 22cal pistol for personal protection.

The same pistol in a 380cal. is sold by Bersa/Firestorm and it has a great reputation too, for around $225.00.

My KelTec P11 was $225.00 and it offers 10+1 rds of 9mm +p ammo, and there is a 12 rd. mag available for those who can't stop the threat with 10+1. The P11 also costs $225-250.00 or so.

The P11 would be my "pick of the litter"..:D

Revolvers are close to your price - get a used one like these other folks say.
.22 ammunition will go bad on you a lot quicker than centerfire.
As for a cheap semi with high capacity, get a CZ 83 in .32, .380, or 9x18 Makarov. Twelve rounds in .380, 15 in .32. The guns usually go for under 400 - basically a Beretta 84 without a tip-up barrel.
A good revolver can be had for cheaper than a good semi. Less moving parts, less complicated design.

Denfoote has been riding that High-Point story for years.
Rimfire pistols are inherently less reliable due to the feeding difficulties of rimmed cartridges in auto pistols. also, ignition is somewhat less reliable because the priming compound may not be evenly distributed. It would be my last choice for a self defense handgun.
High-Points and reliable, though crude. I have one and wouldn't carry it due to the size and the safety. But it has always worked with very little maintenance.

It's kind of pintless to tell someone to get a $200-300 pistol when thay have already stated they are looking in the $100 dolar range. People here refer to prices for used revolvers that may be true in their area, but not elsewhere. In MIchigan used gun prices tend to run higher for new and used.

Walther P22, there are new shorter mag followers that increase the mag cap to 13 rounds. - mac

My Beretta 21A has been 100% reliable with CCI Minimags. But, it only has a 8 round capacity.

Not sure how serious the poster really is, but the P-22 is a small and concealable firearm, and unlike most small guns it's not 'cheap.'

Some I saw at today's gunshow were even shipping with a laser.

Granted it's not a Colt Woodsman with the front sight filed down, but if you wanted a packable .22, the walther is a good choice.

Going to the extreme (albeit not within the $100 limit), we have the Grendel P-30, which held 30 rounds or .22 WMR:

There is at least one available on Guns America right now.

I would have to say

a 22lr revolver. I have never found a 22 auto pistol that was reliable enough for carry. This mostly has to do with the general crappiness of 22 ammo. A revolver avoids this for the most part.

I wish George would start making these things again under the Kel-Tec line, now that the AWB is dead. Pretty much a higher capacity version of the FN FIve-seveN, when one considers the nuetered 5.7x28mm ammo.

I'm gonna get strung up for saying this, but what about a Phoenix Arms HP22? I have one with 700 rounds down the pipe with zero malfunctions.

Also, I just gotta ask. Why not a P3AT????

I have a Walther P22 and it's a great little gun. I have put prolly 2000 rounds through it with no failures. I have used Federal Champion, Winchester X, CCI Mimimag, Remington HP, Federal birdshot, and CCI Stingers. All worked great. The Federal Champion is the best value though. I have heard on other forums that CCI Stingers might be too powerful for the P22 and could break the slide. But I have yet to have any problmes, though I stopped using them after I heard that. Also, many of the parts are Zinc, so Hoppes Oil can actually cause it to wear out even more. I use just a bit of RemOil every so often.

All in all, the P22 is a great purchase and worth the little extra$$.

Side question: Why don't they make hi-cap .22 mags? You could fit so many of those catridges in a magazine.
