So did I, new CZ75B for around $400+....tell me that's not one of the best deals for one of the best 9mm guns out there, I dare you...and it's not made out of some lousy plastic.

Echo the Stoeger Cougar (easily in your price range), but also see if you can find a well-priced Cz-75; I bought mine (my first Cz, too, and I'm very pleased with it) for $360 a few months ago (less taxes and fees). YMMV, but I find it one of the most comfortable guns I've ever handled, and one of the most accurate guns (in my hands) of any I've fired.

one thing for sure i have been on the net looking at guns i would have never thought of. the sig sauer P 5 real nice. the stoeger , CZ 82 also real nice and have money for ammo left over. but still looking . this is fun :D

The Stoeger Cougar for around $350 is a very well made gun, with a solid design. If you are more of a polymer frame guy, I see used XD's for less than $400 all the time.

If you want the Sig I wouldn't wait to long .
Look at Aim surplus lots of Backorders it says
till the end of April .

People see they got them elsewhere they are going to snatch them up fast .

I like the little Bersa 380 for about $250 .

Good Luck in your search , Bill

lvcat2004, You think the CZ75 is a good deal now, I remember just three years ago they regularly sold for $289 new at Academy:eek:. I still kick myself for not buying one then. But do people figuring out they are well worth the money and that our dollar is monopoly money in Europe now the price has risen fast.

Brand new XD9 from CDNN $399
NEW FNP9 from Tanners $379
Glocks from Summitt Gun Broker

I have had or used lots of different handguns in different calibers. For work I just moved from a glock 19 to glock 17. As for my next purchase I am going to get a taurus 24/7 in 9mm.

I don't think you can go wrong with most 9mm weapons out there. The .40 is a good round albeit a bit snappy to shoot. And a little bit more recoil than the 9mm. I have never been a big fan of the .45 acp. We all have our favorites.

There has been a lot of good advice/opinion's given here. I would say it is a great starting point for you. Go handle as many of them as you can and even shoot them if you are able to before you buy. And remember shot placement is king. Everything else is just for your satisfaction.

Have you thought about a standard, regular ol' 9X18 Makarov? I mean the pistol, not the caliber. It's DA/SA, cheap to buy and very cheap to feed, flat, concealable and as dependable as any revolver. They just don't jam. Clean up takes only a few minutes and they're also very accurate. They are extremely pleasant to shoot. Competency comes quickly with this gun. Recoil is negligible; you shouldn't have any flinch issues at all. And, btw, 9X18 is a bit more of an effective round than a .380.

9mm

Good replies above. I'll add a +1 on 9mm. it's the most common handgun cartridge, and always the cheapest except for .22LR. A .45 ACP will empty your wallet unless you reload and cast your own lead bullets.

If you can find a Charles Daley HiPower still left in any local stores, you should be able to buy it new for well under $400. It's 9mm, good quality and a proven design by the guy that designed the 1911. I like the 1911 ergonomics (who doesn't?) but the HiPower handles even better. it also has double the magazine capacity compared to a 1911 in .45 ACP. The grips are fatter, so YMMV. The CD HP is my bedside gun.

The Cougar sounds like a good bet also.
I agree with the previous poster on the Ruger P-series. I had one for 10 years, finally sold it. Never did feel right, especially after experiencing other pistols.

good use for your "stimulus" check. Not much that is more stimulating than a handgun, whichever side of it you are on :D

S&W M&P 9mm. Budsgunshop.com $439 delivered. If you buy before April 30th, you can send in a rebate for $50 and two free mags. $389 with four mags is a smokin deal. Probably why I ordered one.

Find out what fits you before you follow any other advice. Getting an inexpensive gun that doesn't fit is only cheaper than getting an expensive one that doesn't fit, and it's still a waste of money.

Where I am u'd have a hard time finding a Glock for under 400 bucks.

Try out the Taurus 24/7 Pro 9mm. I love mine and it's very good accuracy, target acquisition is slow at first cause u gotta get used to the grips but after that it's smooth sailing.

I'd recommend the CZ40B that CDNN has in their catalog for under $300. The design is straight CZ75B on the inside, chambered for the .40 S&W, and has the external profile of a Colt 1911 (the partner in the exercise, until Colt backed out). About 700 were manufactured, and it's a jewel to hold and shoot (I got mine in a GunBroker auction, paid under $275, once you figure shipping and FFL transfer fees).

S&W M&P.
Right now I see them for about $460.
A little over your limit but S&W is running a promotion until the end of April - buy the gun and they give you a $50 rebate and two free magazines (about $30 each if you have to buy them).
You'd get a brand new US made 9mm with S&W customer service backing it and a total of 4 hi-cap magazines for about $410.

And I like mine so much I'm thinking about getting a second one.

I also second the CZ-75 variants. I've had two, shot several more, and all were good guns.
And third, I can't say anything bad about Glocks. I've had two of those (both .40) and although I didn't like the round, the guns were reliable and accurate.
