I have search the area looking at different pistols. I will use it mainly for plinking but might get into a little friendly competition. It would not be a concealed carry gun.

As far as reliability and value, which of the following would you choose?

Ruger P89 $395. 9mm (used)

Ruger P95 $319. 9mm (new)

Sig P226 $525 9mm (factory reconditioned)

Sig P220 $550 9mm (used)

Colt Nickel Combat Commander 45 cal. $950 (used)

I was going to put this up as a poll but forgot to slect the option! Sorry.

What did you narrow it down to? If your not going to carry, and your hand fits, I'd get a CZ75. It's by far my best shooter, and also any one that shoots it, says the same! The gun is a laser, and has never had a failure while shooting. I did manage to break a trigger return spring while dryfiring. The all steel gun is a little heavy to carry, but it sure is thin, and some carry them just fine.:)

Cant go wrong with them Sigs. The 220 is a 45, and unless you reload, I'd stick with a 9mm

226. No reason to pay the .45 ammo premium. But of course the Sunday Schhool answer is: whichever fits you best. :neener:

The Rugers would be utterly reliable -- but not very well suited to any kind of competition. I wouldn't pay $400 for a used P89 -- you can get a new one from Bud's for $360, here: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/75/products_id/13462

You probably won't enjoy plinking with a .45 ACP, given the price of ammo. The P226 is a good weapon - I'm just not a big Sig fan, especially with their price.

I'd second the CZ. They are reasonably priced and completely reliable. I shoot a CZ SP01 in USPSA competition and some of the top shooters in the sport right now have been CZ shooters. There's enough after market support for holsters and such that they are viable. I'd check around (I know there's at least one CZ for sale around here -- my 75BD!) -- you could probably get a good deal.

Reliability and value - the Sigs

I'd choose one of the Sigs based on your criteria of reliability and value. The choice between 9mm and .45 is up to you and your feelings about ammo costs and which caliber fits your needs better.

The Colt sounds nice, but is a lot more expensive and won't shoot .45 ammo any better than the Sig P220. And you did mention "value".

I'm just not a fan of Ruger semiautos, finding them clunky in design and not that attractive. I will admit that they do work.

For the price and knowing I have shot most of what you have there. I would say that the P95 would be the one to enjoy.

The P226 is also a great 9mm to shoot.

Let me add a vote for either of the SIG pistols, with a second choice being the Colt even though I'm not a fan of nickel plated handguns, there's nothing wrong with them.

I don't own a Ruger pistol and have no plans of ever acquiring one.

Of the choices listed: P226. It is higher capacity than the P220, and FACTORY reconditioned. I don't know where the .45 P220 discussion is coming from, as the original post indicated the P220 was 9mm. I would avoid the Colt; Commanders can be temperamental in reliability.

I think the SIG P220 is by definition a .45 ACP pistol, available in three major versions, and many sub-versions in each of those.

If the P220 he's looking at is in 9mm, I'd be curious as to how it got that way.

P220 is 45 only

Quote: They make the P220 in both 9mm and .45.
---------------

Small correction HM, IIRC, the P220 comes only in 45.

Think you're thinking of either the P226, or P229, Carry 9mm's.

LS ;)

ps.. QUOTE:Sig P226 $525 9mm (factory reconditioned) - for plinking, lot's of ammo, low cost, as compared to 45, and a great gun, accurate, forgiving, and will do the job of HD/SD, would be my choice for ya.

There were 9MM P220's made, both with European and American style mag releases. I looked into the possibility of tracking one down, but the scarcity of magazines turned me off to the idea.

For the choices listed, I think the P226 would be your best bet.

SIG P226. Normally I am well into the P220 camp but as far as plinking goes 9mm is just the better round due to its low cost.

So go with the P226 pick up a couple of 17 round mec-gar magazines and load them up with some hot +P JHP stuff for defense and plink to your hearts content with the cheap stuff.

I am by no means a Ruger hater (The products not that stupid poltical maneuverings) but either SIG is the way to go. They may however sour you on other guns. :neener:
