I've started buying knives lately, thanks to Kor who had a large sale a while ago. And now would like a few more to expand upon the collection. But I don't know too much about them. I have read information about different steels used and some different locking methods for folders, but there are so many out there.

So lets see what everyone thinks is a good budget knife to have just because it looks good, or works well.

CRKT has been my savior concerning the options they have available. I could never spend the money for a Corkum First Strike or Tighe Tac, but I can when they make it.

Cold Steel seems good, but for just a bit more, Benchmade and others seem better, but I like my 5" Voyager.

Folders preferred, since I haven't found an easy method to carry a non folder, suggestions for carrying accepted too.

Let the ideas rip!

I love Kershaw. Good knives, well balanced, feel good, inexpensive...what more can you want?

My Scallion is a 2.5" assisted opener that runs $30-40 most places. My Vapor II is a 3.5 or 4" half serrated blade that I picked up at Walmart for $24.95. I'm about to buy a Vapor without the serrations for $19.95 at Walmart. They also have higher end knives but none are particularly expensive.

That cold Steel Bushman was a well spent $20. Great skinning knife, great kitchen blade.

Easy to sharpen. Sturdy enough to make into a spear.

I suggest you carry a blade for self defense and one as a task knife. I sometimes carry as many as six. Only a few are for SD use. Most are to lure other knife nuts when they see the pocket clips. If I was on a budget and was not talking mult-tools it would be a Benchmade AFCK for SD, a CRKT Lightfoot M1 for tasks and a Livesay Woo as a necker hold out piece. Plus it is a fixed blade. Folders are already broken. If I God forbid had to knife fight it would be a Gerber Yari. Get them while they are still around. The absolute best place I have found for production blades is knifeworks.com. Roger is the man and Dana is the woman. Tell them mercop sent you. Blades are addictive. Check out www.mercop.com and see.

collection

i have a coldsteel mini pendleton that i really like. reminds me of the old loveless drop point. just wish the hilt was about 3/4" longer. i prefer short blades. for collecting...........what you like, from a quality maker. i shy away from expensive pocket knives as i lose one about every 5 years. current carry a gerber 400 lockback. sharp little begger. best carry was a small timber lite i had for eight years. left it laying on the back bumper of my truck. arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh.:banghead:

Argh, so many! But I guess that's what makes it good!

Probably going to order another Kershaw, my Chive is nice... but too small. Maybe the Vapor I or II.

I wanted to try SOG Flash, but no one has mentioned those.

Any particular Spyderco I should get?

As far as good spydercos go, the Endura is a great knife for the price, but if you have a bit more cash, I say get the Police model or the Military.

Well, I ordered a Benchmade Griptillian with AXIS lock, SOG Flash I, and a Kershaw Vapor II after looking at pages and pages.

I kept on looking at Spyderco, but they just didn't catch my eye for some reason. Maybe I need to hold one.

My wife wants a Cold Steel Voyager XT (6" blade) so I will order that one later... and the CRKT Tighe Tac and Cascade were not in stock, so that's for later too.

WhoKnowsWho- No fair! I thought this was a budget blades thread and you go and spend about $140. :D

Skunky going to get the Emerson Hardwear since it's a little more docile looking than the Commander or Karambit I normally carry :uhoh:

$140? I didn't spend that much!

Benchmade Griptillian with AXIS lock $53
SOG Flash I $27
and a Kershaw Vapor II $20

Okay, so I almost spent that much. But I also got $10 off, so under $100 for three good quality knives, that's budget to me! :D

Good idea, I think I am going to start carrying a second "utility" knife when I carry my Cold Steel 5" Voyager... I pulled that one out at work since everyone knew I had a knife to cut some Saran Wrap!

whoknowswho

make sure you check out the SOG flash with alum handle instead of the zytel. It'd feel much better in your hand.

I carry a Flash II myself. A bit too big for utility, I'm finding out.

I really got into knives this year, I guess I spent around $1000. This is a drop in the bucket for some. Makes it easier to justify gun purchases though.
