here is a picture of my best 100 yard 5 shot group so far out of my cz american in 30-06, Thus far all I have done is free floated the barrel, bedded the action, and lapped the bolt lugs. The 168 gr federal gold metal match shoots the best.

I am a bit concerned though. I can only get groups like this after I have fouled the rifle pretty well (15-20 shots) I am wondering if i need to lap the barrel.

Also the rifle orginally had contact between the forearm and the barrel, I have removed that when I free floated it. I am curious if I would get any benifit from putting some pressure back on the barrel.

Should I be happy with this or keep dinking with it? Id really like to get groups like this with a clean barrel.

Any of your thoughts would be appreciated

Your gun is obviously not broke, stop trying to fix it. A lot of guys I know would do almost anything to get those kind of groups.

I think I would try some treatments with JB,s bore paste to see if you can smooth out the barrel. Might be some tooling marks or rough spots in the bore. Otherwise go out and shoot something.

A little less than 3/4 MOA with a rifle that cost what, $500 (at the most) with a dirty barrel? I think i would thank my lucky stars and make fun of other people at the range.

YEAGER NO TRUER WORDS HAVE BEEN SPOKEN. MY FEELING EXACTLY ACTUALLY IN THE SAME BOAT GOT MY GIRLFRIEND A 300 WSM WORKED UP SOME LOADS AND SHES SHOOTING WITH A OFF-THE-SHELF FACTORY RIFLE FROM SAVAGE AWESOME!!!

LAST WEEK SHE PRINTED A 1 1/2"-1 3/4" 3 SHOT GROUP AT 500 YDS. TODAY SHE SHOT AN HONEST TO GOODNESS 5/8" 3 SHOT GROUP AT 500 YDS IT WAS A LITTLE WINDY SO THE GROUP ACTUALLY HIT JUST OFF THE PAPER ON THE BACKBOARD BUMMER...

IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT! HEHEHE!!

The most I'd do at this point is to put a shim out at the tip of the forearm. No thicker than what a five-pound pull gives to separate for insertion.

I've found that is a "nearly always" Good Thing, improving around 90% of the rifles to which I've done it.

The theory is that it acts like the shock absorbers on a car, damping spring vibrations and thus giving better uniformity, shot to shot. (I guess that's why the Limeys call shock absorbers "dampers". :)

That rifle is completely hopeless and I wouldn't spend another penny on it. I will gladly take it off your hands so you don't have to be put through any further punishment. :D
