What would you consider the best hunting pistol in 10mm that is reasonably priced? Looking to buy one sometime in the future...

G20 or g40. They're robust and weather resistant . others can do the same but I doubt they'd be as tough. My preference is the g20 but if it's just for hunting the g40 is better suited. I use my g20 for camp and trail in the Midwest and I don't care if it gets wet , dirty or scuffed. It's all good and my g20 has never done anything except work regardless of what I've done to it.

If I were buying a handgun specifically for big game hunting I'd prefer a magnum revolver with a 6" or longer barrel. Which magnum cartridge depends on what you plan to hunt and at what ranges. You generally get a more accurate firearm, especially at longer ranges. And if fired from 6" or longer barrels 357, 41, or 44 magnum cartridges have noticeably more power than you can get from a 10mm cartridge.

That said Glock 10mm pistols are what I carry in the woods. A 4 to 4.5" semi-auto pistol is about the same overall size as a 3" barreled revolver. From 3-4" barrels most, if not all, the power advantage of magnum revolver rounds is lost. That combined with more ammo makes any of the 10mm pistols a better woods SD option.

The 10mm cartridge has enough power for most big game, but as a hunting cartridge you're going to limit the effective range. It could certainly be used, just is less than ideal. If you're looking for a dual purpose gun10mm is a good choice.

Obviously, I like Glock. But Smith has just released a version of their M&P in 10mm. That is one I'd also check out

GLOCK 20 or Glock 40 for semi autos. For deer get yourself some 180gr Swift A Frame bullets and a case full of Accurate #9 powder.

My cheapo RIA 10mm GI model is very accurate. The sights suck. A $400 pistol that is very accurate can have great sights put on it for considerably less than the cost difference to step up to the next level in 10mm pistols. $350 difference will buy me the dovetail cutter of my choice to fit whatever sights I want to put on my slide, will also buy the sights, and the extra mags I keep saying I’m going to buy.

I’m generally a “buy what you want” guy but in this case it’s hard to justify an extra 300 or more just for better sights.

If you’re going after quarry that can bite you back, leave the pistol(10mm) at home and get a revolver chambered in at least 41 Magnum.

OTOH, if you just want to take deer or the occasional wayward critter, there’s nothing wrong with applying a 10mm.

Personally I don’t have a 10mm, but I do run a couple of 45 ACPs and I’ve been happy with their performance parameters and the results on intended targets I’ve seen.

Rock Island makes a 10mm that is very nice; the "Rock" series has two models, one is an 8-round single stack ($749), the other a 16 round double stack ($799).

i started a post about this topic as well. I love my 10mm’s and the rock island is really nice

The 10mm offers 45 ACP like "gusto"
With a double stacked capacity like a .40 S&W.
With the power of a full tilt 357 Magnum...
What's not to love?

the only thing I like better than my 10mm is my beretta 960 Rowland. I am in the process of getting a slide for my Glock 21 to make it a 460 rowland. My tnw aero has a 460 rowland barrel and it’s amazing

I've also been really interested in this caliber over the years. It sounds awesome....but just like the Rolling Stones song......."You can't always get....."

If it’s a 10MM auto loader dedicated to hunting then I’d agree with the G40. If your gonna reload then I’d suggest an aftermarket barrel.

Yes, but I shoot Hi-Tek coated lead bullets in my Glock 10mms with no problem whatsoever.
This is true. I bought some hi-tek coated bullets the other day (maybe 3 years ago now) and havnt got around to loading them yet. I've heard nothing but good things about them.

Since you specified pistol and 10mm I would offer the Ruger Target in 10mm. This one is mine.

But the Glock offerings have the option of a RD so there's that if its something you're interested in.

Personally I prefer a rifle or shotgun when hunting.

I've been struggling with this same decision. For hunting deer or non-predator large game, I think a revolvers is fine.. 45acp would definitely not be my choice.
I've come to the conclusion that if I have to stop a charging bear,, I'd rather have 15rds of 10mm in a G40 or G20 than 6rds of 44mag. I might miss 3 or 4 out of six from a revolver at a charging bear , but I don't see me missing more than that with a Glock. I did a little research of people who actually do use g20's and G40's for bear, so I didn't just pull my decision out of thin air. I can empty a magnum revolver in a washing machine at 30yds in 5 to 6 seconds. I can put 10 to 12 rds from a Glock 45acp in the same amount of time. In the process of buying a G20, so I'm gonna hedge my bet that I've got a better chance with 5 to 6 or more rds hitting the bear instead of 3 or 4.:what:

I have shot a G20 and G40 but I have also shot a Remington R1 Hunter long slide and a Sig P220 hunter and would choose either of them before a Glock if hunting was the main concern. I really liked the long slide 1911. I think Springfield has one too among a few others.

All that said and my woods pistol is a G21 which is still formidable.

Have you have had a bear charge you or a large moose or buffalo? They are FAST! and you will definitely miss most your shots, unless you are a African hunter and use to bush animals charging you.

my charging animal story, was in the Deep Woods of Western Washington. I spooked a large black bear, it ran off, and I froze, could not pull my .460 magnum out quick enough. I was so pumped full of human Redbull that I was shaking. That’s my story, and the stinky BigFoot that keeps stalking me.

That Why I’m also going with 10mm with 14+ rounds of hard cast or solids. I’m also doing a Red Dot too.

its a lot of fun. Like a lot of others, it’s a round that should be reloaded vs buying factory ammo
