I've said it before. It's still true:
If you like to tinker, get a 10-22.
If you like to complain, get a 597.
If you like to shoot, get a 60.

Haaahaaa, you got that one right bensdad! :D

If your looking for a good to go, inexpensive semi, I very much recommend the Marlin 60. If you want something with a turnbolt, try a Marlin 925.

Both best bang for you buck in my opinion.

I say the Savage base Mark II in a bolt and the Marlin 60 in a semi. But I would beg borrow or steal the difference for a cz.

Excuse me????? I have a 597 and LOVE it, I have put over over 50,000 rounds through it, I found that it loves almost all ammo, except for the remington thunderbolts. It gets great groups. I would like to know if you have ever owned one? Because you cant complain about somthing that you havent owned.PERIOD.

Depends on the definition of inexpensive. Right now, the best value is a Sako Quad. These rilfes originally sold for around $900, and they are now selling for $400 new. Great accuracy, and you can get extra barrels in the other big three rimfire calibers.

Funny that the Model 60 seems to be getting all of the nods around here. I like mine just fine, but accurate is as accurate does, and teh 10/22 has the best selection of accessories around. "the MArlin 60 doesn't need them." Yeah, right. Show me a Marlin 60 that shoots 1/4" groups at 50 yards. I am not saying a stock 10/22 will do that, but at least you have the option of upgrading.

Also, a metal trigger guard (which is missin on both the new 10/22s and new 60s, is a must. find a used 10/22 and be happy. If you aren't. at least there is something you can do to improve it.

check out www.rimfirecentral.com

show me a 10/22 that consistently shoots 1/4" at 50 and I bet you that person has at least double the price of the gun in it and is feeding it Eley ammo.

Since the thread is " Best Inexpensive 22 " and not how much $$$ can I dump into my 22 to make it super accurate , the 60 gets the nod from me ( well in my case , the model 700 Marlin ).

But then you can dump $500 into a 10/22 and still not out shoot a box stock Savage or CZ. ;)

i have a Marlin 60 stainless that i really like. just got a Marlin 981T for target shooting. its awesome! shoots great, great accuracy and it was only $179. its the only tube fed bolty .22 that i know of being produced these days. its worth a look.

still, the most fun gun i ever owned was a Browning BL-22, lever action. it was also tube fed and accurate as all get-out. its a little spendy though, pushing $400.

FOR ROCKETFISH
actually for a mag fed, the remmy 597 is good, it is about the only 22 now still made , under 400 bucks, that comes with fully adjustable rear, and front sites.
to make a 597 run, get third gen or later mags, should have a 10, inside a circle, on the bottom. the rail fix, is to pull the action out, pull the rail assy all the way out the back, then just put back in , finger tight, and just back in far enough, to reassemble, and not further or tighter. This will keep the rails from binding, and should end all your feed probs.

Got my Marlin 60 seven years ago, and it is the most accurate .22 I have ever handled. I think it would be hard to beat accuracy-wise unless you start doing a lot of custom work.

NOW THEN, this is an exceptionally accurate mod 60 that I have, so don't try to duplicate at home, plus I do a metal treating system on mine , that most will never do. but this is a 70 dollar pawnshop find mod 60, with a 75 dollar Barska
6x24x42 scope on it;
and all these groups were shot in 1 day, (actually , many more groups than this),
all with no cleaning between groups, just fouler shots, and they were all shot at 100 yds, with slow varying winds, mostly 10 mph., from the right front.
Oh yeah, all groups are at least 5 rounds.

Not bad for a brand new 22, that someone had tried to jam a 22 mag round
into it, and got it thoroughly stuck between the lifter spring, and into the feed throat assy., huh? Again, did you check out the American Eagle group? a one ragged holer, with the
stupid flyer...

Mossberg 702, you can get them for less that $90 at Dick's Sporting Goods.

Keep them clean and well-lubed and you'll be fine.

Marlin 60

I am not sure how you can beat a Model 60 right out of the box. Of course I recommend buying one used at a pawn shop or something.

They are just as good used and abused as NIB. Too bad you can't say the same for a 10/22 which requires lots of cash to make it cool

Yep boy, the Model 60 is the shiznit

Couldn't agree more. It's tough to beat a $60.00 dollar pawn shop Marlin 60, for value.

Marlin 60 wins semi auto. Savage mk2 wins bolt action.
depends on the race

for good price bolt, savage or marlin

for semi, ruger or marlin.
Only thing I have against the Marlin 60 is that I hate tube magazines., pain to load and can't carry extra's in the pocket. But they also have the 795 which comes with a 10 round detachable.

I like the 10/22's because they are very easy to play with and parts are cheap, or you can mod for free. IN MY EXPERIENCE the 60's are more accurate, but if you are shooting pop cans then it doesn't matter that much.

Or you can not worry about it, spend the money on a Thompson R55 and never wonder, what if. Better than all hands down. But it will cost you.

I have a model 60 thats about 22 years old now.

These are the average groups at 50 yards.

I just bought a savage MK II FV with an accu-trigger whic cost about 275 and have only shot it once buts its gonna be a tack driver.

I have a 22 year old model 60 that shoots dime sized groups at 50 yards....I got this gun when I was 6.

I also just bought a savage MK II but haven't gotten to shoot it yet.

Since inexpensive is in the thread title-

Romanian M1969 training rifle. Simple, well built, good ergonomics, accurate and dirt cheap.

I love Marlin sixties, but.

When measuring group size, you have to measure the entire five shot group, not just the tight four shots.............unfortunately.

I never seen a Marlin 60 shoot 1/4" groups at 50yds.

I would love to see in person one that does.

I would also love to see how one measures their groups who say they got one that will.

A ruger 10/22 will outshout the Marlin*

*if you remove all of the ruger parts, throw them away and replace them with $800 worth of aftermarket parts. :neener:
