I see there are several variations of the Mosin Nagant, models 91/30, M38 and M44 to name some. Which are considered to be the most desirable and why? I have a M44 and was just taking a look at the others. I really enjoy shooting my Mosin and may be in the market for the other models as well.
Thanks,

Jim Hall

I have a '43 Izzy 91/30 and love it. But from what I hear, the Finns are probably the best. I'm looking for an M-39 even as we speak.

I started off with an M38, then I had to have an M44 so I got one. Next, I almost bought a 91/30 but passed, and instead bought a Steyr-Mannlicher 95. I'll probably go back and get the 91/30 to round out my Mosin-Nagant collection. Funny thing is, I bought all three within 3 weeks if each other.

Supposedly the Finnish ones are the best. I prefer the 38 myself. Small and handy but no heavy bayonet.

Just in case nobody else mentions it :D, the Finnish m/39.

All the Mosins are good solid rifles (assuming they aren't worn out) and capable of surprising accuracy. The Finn m/39 is reknowned for it's good barrel, sights, and stock. It is the most comfortable Mosin for most people to shoot due to the stock design.

Collecting Mosin-Nagants is an interesting hobby. Lots of variations and the rifles are relatively inexpensive. And ammo is dirt cheap, so you can shoot a lot.

I've got 1891s, 91/30s, M38s, M44s, 91/592, and M39s.

Personally, I think the 91/59s are the best carbines and the M39s are the best rifles. That's based on available condition and accuracy.

Best bang for the buck is usually the M44, but 91/59s have been going on sale lately.

Without a doubt, the Finns.
The easiest to get right now and probably the best is the M39. A close second but hard to find is a M28/30. I have 10 Finns and all them shoot under 2 MOA and most shoot far better than I can.

A lot of Mosin Nagant collectors say the Finn M39 is the most accurate, as well as having the best sights. The M39 I bought about three months ago was my first rifle and I think it's great! I'm already taking out bowling pins at 165 yards with it. I haven't tried any of the numerous other versions but wouldn't mind a 91/30 PU (the scoped sniper version) to compare it to :D . You can get cheap non-corrosive Wolf ammo ($4-5 for 20 rounds) or the surplus spam-cans for it, too!

Don't get me wrong

I have nothing against the Finns. Mine only shoots about 2 1/2'', but I bought it as a U-fixem, so I wasn't expecting MOA. It looks nice, a little chunky, but all MN carbines are. But when I hold it, I just don't get the same historic feeling I get off my other MN's. Don't know why, but I've just never warmed up to the thing. My favorites are the M44's, but only because I think the bayo is cool.

I have a M91 with quite a history. Used by the Russians in WWI, captured by the Germans, given to the Czechs as repairations, then sold to the Finns who rebarreled the action and restocked it in 1942. Shoots about 3MOA with iron sites, but I haven't had the opportunity to practice with it much...

The finns are good, but they all tend to be heavier than the Russians. The 91/30 is the best balanced and quickest in the hand of all the Mosins except perhaps the M-38 carbines. The M-44 carbines are actually quite heavy with that big bayonet assembly.
