Well you can prepare for SHTF, but it will likely never happen. If it did; water, food and medical supplies would be more valuable.

So, in that case...just buy whatever you like and whatever is fun for you to shoot. Then just buy lots of ammo and learn to shoot it well. Keep a ariety of ammo on hand to satisfy your SHTF fears.

Some folks enjoy shotguns (versatility is outstanding, I couldn't be without an 870 or two), some folks enjoy AK's or AR's. If it were me and long guns were my thing, I'd grab an 870 and a marlin 60 or a ruger 10/22. 22's are great for lots of things and you can afford to shoot and store massive amounts of ammo. For me, a good lever action 30-30 with peep sights is more fun to shoot than any AK or AR, and very versatile (especially inside of 150 yards).

OP said:
I live in a suburban area, kind of a mix between a small town and a city.

The shtf scenario I see, and I live in the 'burbs, is natural disaster or political insurrection. For the first, I let my wife feed the squirrels and expect to reverse the position. For the second, I can only expect to feed on the bodies of the ill prepared!

If I had to engage a car load of BGs (i.e. 4 or more) and they were all toting side arms or better... doing so with either a shotgun or a handgun would not be my preference.

IMO, these are a realistic scenarios that could be associated with a Katrina type event:

...local thugs hear my generator and decide they want it.

...Or when there is some kind of extortion squad going around soliciting protection fees.

...You defend yourself from a hold up, but you are identified and the gang reinforcements show up at your door.

There's a reason why the army fights urban warfare with the M4 as the standard issue weapon.

Don't forget to get an Xrail for your Remington / Mossberg - gots to be able to take care of them hoards of Zombies without reloading!

Maybe this can slide in before closing time...:) Oh wait, it's October so all bets are off until 10/31!!!

Alright, I'm bored... So, I was thinking about the new AMC series Walking Dead... I think with zombies the ideal gun would be a Ruger 10/22 chambered in 22 Magnum. Of course it'll run you a hell of a lot more than $800 because of the magazines being @ $100 a pop for the good steel ones. Think about it - you can carry 500 rounds on your person. Zero to little recoil for fast follow-ups and decent power out of a long barrel at close ranges.

Now back to our program...

If you're looking into purchasing a defensive firearm, the first thing would be to figure out what the most likely scenarios are that you would want to have it handy. Discussions about concealed carry, car jackings, or home invasion may not be all that thrilling, but they're much more grounded in reality than sitting around discussing pie-in-the-sky "SHTF" scenarios that have a much lower likelihood of ever actually happening.
