Bizzare range session

File a legal complaint. I'm pretty sure you could slap assault on the guy threatening to kick your ass. Stated what he was intending to do, and most likely had a gun on him. I don't think the BATF would let them keep their FFL after that.

+1 on the erratic behavior from lead poisoning. I've seen a few gun store & range owners that have been off their rocker.

This is why I prefer to shoot outdoors in a upwind of my targets.

I once shot at the indoor range at The Firing Line in Aurora. There were some gangsterish type guys there shooting (safely and pretty well, I might add) and this guy next to them had some sort of issue with them and started blurting out cursewords. Gangsters ignored guy (proving that you can't always tell a book by it's cover) and finally guy stomped off the range and started talking to one of the guys behind the counter. I have no idea what was said, but the complainer ended up stomping back into the range, packed his gear, said "F this place" and left. When I left, I asked the guy behind the counter what had happened, and he said that this guy was claiming to be a olympic caliber shooter and that he didn't want to shoot next to gangsters that didn't know what they were doing because it was unsafe. The guy turned around, looked at the gangsters targets, looked at the complainers targets, turned back around, looked the complainer in the eye and said something to the effect of "Special Olympics?". While that is fairly offensive, it was also about the funniest thing I have ever heard. Now, I have no idea if that's what exactly was said, but if it was, that is some quick thinking!

I'm a reloader, but understand that ranges have high everhead costs. Whenever shooting at an indoor range, I will still buy a fox of ammo from the counter (even tough I am shooting several others I reloaded or bought somewhere else). If they sell guns at resonable prices, they don't make much off that. It's ammo they make their profit off of. I buy the ammo to help keep the doors open so I have someplace close to shoot.

Final Words Follow-up

Well the owner and I spoke a few days ago and even though he will NOT Teminate or Transfer the manager Employee he offered 500 rounds of 45ACP as he was embarassed by the situation. He also refunded the 1 year membership. He seems liek a good guy and as a business owner I understand how it is with employees good and bad.

He said I was welcome to return and I told him if I got a sincere apology from the indignant employee I'd consider it but I doubt I'd come back before she was let go or transfered. I'll pick up my 500 rounds next week, His gesture of good will was accepted graciously, and I can always shoot at his other nearby range with no problems.

Maybe he can not let her go and is embarressed cause it is his wife.

I'd let him keep the ammo. He refunded your membership, gave you an apology, all in a situation he couldn't control when it happened. That'd be good enough for me.

Unless he is going to make a-hole pay for it. Then I'd say "I feel a thousand is more fair." :)

I shoot at "On Target" in Murfreesboro,TN.It is run well. One can shoot their own ammo whether factory or reloads. If one of their guns is rented, the ammo is bought from them(Atlantic Arms). This is reasonable. They staff goes out of their way to assisit.Firearms prices are fair in cash deals or trading. Two of the 25 yard ranges are for rifles. They have no problem in me picking up my brass or other brass about me. Byron

Others have stated this before but, tell him you suggest he has his employees check their lead levels.

Think about it for a minute, lead poisoning does impact your brain and can alter behavior. Also, he seems like a nice guy, and might truely be one...or, he may already be suspicious that his range isn't up to par, and may want to stay officially ignorant, hence him giving you a very nice amount of ammo rather than just terminating the employee, keeps you quiet and happy, keeps employee happish, etc.

Sounds like a bunch of frickin pyschos glockman. Best stay clear of them. Admire your restraint when you got booted. Have a good range up here in Bay Area, find yourself up this way and want to shoot with normal (for California anyway) people.

Wow.

We've shot at the Firing Line in Huntington Beach before. Seemed like a good place with good people. As of three months ago, there was no prohibition against using my own ammo as long as it was FMJ. Some odd rules, such as no loading of cartridges into mags behind the yellow firing line (gun was on the firing station) and a requirement to fill out the initial application form every time you shot.

Other than that: good experiences. I was looking at their post boards and an employee volunteered info on the seller and the firearm. The employees seemed friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

However, I also would not have tolerated the behavior you experienced. Perhaps you ran into an estrogen storm. Either way, a lot of other business want my Jeffersons.

OP please name an shame please.

It's been my observation that many gun shops and ranges attract aholes for owners and staff.

That macho crap they pulled in the parking lot is laughable at best.

I can beleive they would be mad at you for asking, but following you into the parking lot and harassing you? That is completely childish and unacceptable. Spread the word and don't do business there anymore (even though they probably wouldn't let you anyway).

Please tell me none of these nut jobs were carrying during this incident.:scrutiny: If they were, you should contact the authorities. Choosing to continue an altercation while armed is stupid to say the least, and I would guess venturing into the parking lot armed is pretty illegal in LA.

Employees are NOT allowed to carry. I wonder why?

As I mentioned I was offered to shoot at the Burbank Location and the Mgr. there is a nice guy. I probably won't however.:)

Or, maybe worse yet, his girlfriend, and doesn't want the wife to know?
I doubt it IMHO she likes her own. :D

I'd let him keep the ammo. He refunded your membership, gave you an apology, all in a situation he couldn't control when it happened.
I told him it wan't necessary he insisted I graciously accepted and told him I thought he was a good man and honorable business person. Should the Mgr. leave or get transfered I'll likely try them again. However, my guess is based on her education and ability she's going nowhere.

I'm happy to say I haven't had an experience like that in Northern California. The indoor range I go to is great (The Gun Room, Elk Grove). I think your decision not to go to that or any of his other ranges is a good one, even with the ammo he gave you. There is definitely something going on behind the scenes there, and I wouldn't want to be associated with them when it all comes out.

It just goes to show you that some gun people are just plain old jerks who are only interested in the money. I re-learn that lesson every once and a while.

Ft.Smith, AR had a gunshop with an indoor range afew years ago. I bought a membership thinking "how convinent, a 10 minute drive away and indoors so no bad weather worries." Less than a month later they closed for good.

They KNEW they were closing down and still they didn't say one word, the man at the counter convinced by telling me how much money I save by not having to drive to the Old Fort Gun Club range.

Sometimes it's hard for us who love shooting to understand these Jerks.

I had a membership to Gateway Rifle & Pistol club, Jacksonville, FL, at one time. As I understand it, they had a rule that if you moved 50 miles away or more, your membership was dormant (you weren't required to pay dues) until you moved back, due to members on military duty and such. They had a "once in a lifetime fee" that you paid on your initial membership. I went back and tried to renew my membership and I was told I had to pay a "once in a lifetime" fee, again. I said I don't think so. I am still alive.
They said I let my membership lapse, so I had to pay it again.
Then it's not a bloody "once in a lifetime fee" then, is it?!!!
I told them I wouldn't darken their door again.
They used to be about the sport, not the BS.

HTML:
Would it be libelous to post the name of the shop so that others may be spared from wasting their time/ money there?
If your statements are true, I don't see how it could be libelous or slander.

That explains a lot

HTML:
Perhaps lead poisioning?

Symptoms:
Behavioral symptoms in adults
Unexplained changes in mood or personality
Changes in sleep patterns
Inability to concentrate
Decreased sex drive
Memory loss
Irritability

And all this time, I thought she had menopause:neener:

Neurological effects of lead poisoning might be a factor, but ultimately, when it comes to "Range/Gun Shop horror stories" it's an economic filter.

I never worry about the overall health of the U.S. economy until I start getting good service at Wal-Mart, fast food places, and gun stores.

Post their name and location. That is outrageous behavior for anyone or any company. The best way to handle this is to hit them in the pocket book. A loss of clientèle because of the way they handle people will work wonders.
