I am looking into buying a new rifle. The rifles that I have been looking at are Springfield M1A's in Scout Squad or the shorter SOCOM, some kind of AR-15 varient, and lastly I have been thinking about some kind of FAL but I dont know much about them. So any recomendations and experiences would be of great service.

Just bought a Bushmaster AR-15A2 20inch. Shoots like a dream and i love it.

Only set me back $875 after taxes.

If i was going to get a M1A, i would have to go for the Walnut Stock, black just ruins it for me...

ARs are cheaper to buy and shoot than the M1s and Fals. I don't have an M1 but I do have a Fal (built on an Imbel receiver), but I shoot the AR at least 20X more than the Fal.

You can customize the ARs easier than the other two.

If you are wanting a Fal - DSA makes the best new ones out there right now. Stay away from fals built on Century brand receivers (the upper is the reeiever) as they can have minor to major problems when they were built.

AR's are fun to build and shoot. If you build it yourself, you could do it for relatively cheap, but the range snobs will slaughter you if they find out that it is a "frankenAR". The platform is very versatile, because of it's modular design. Get a .22LR conversion kit for the AR and you can shoot it for cheap all day long. Like a big bore? Get a beowulf or 458SOCOM upper. Like a long range rifle? Get a 6.5Grendel upper.

FAL's are great battle rifles (probably the LAST great battle rifle). As mentioned, DSA makes a GREAT FAL - I like the PARA versions a whole lot - at least the ones' I've handled and shot. My favorite FAL is still the South African R1 - can't beat them for accuracy.

M1A's are fine rifles. VEry accurate and easy to shoot. I really like them, but I'd have to say, go with the walnut stock - the SOCOM version is a great "tacticool" rifle - it is still accurate, but it just does not look right.

All 3 are great choices, but you'll end up shooting the AR more.
