Okay, I really enjoy all the testing and stats I find here on THR about the different powders. Although I would like to know if you would all feel the same if Blackpowder was more available and the haz mat fee didn't apply. Being fairly new to this sport I have only lit a few different powders, and I always go back to the real stuff. Is price an option, amount used, traditional methods? I feel that from the plunkin' I've done that some are way too hot for me, others smell real bad, the loads I use vary too much or even clean up differently. What do you all feel and why aren't more of you sticking to BP? Thanks in advance for your opinions!:D Teresa

Same here, except at first, could not find BP, bought 777, didn't like it, bought APP, definitely hated that, smells real bad, found Goex, under 13 a can, gone to 14.50 now, still bought 5 more. 40 minutes away.

This is still 5 bucks or so less than the subs.

Goex, I've seen, can be had for about 11 bucks in lots of 25 cans. Most of us would probably like to have at least 2 fellow shooters within say an hour's drive time and split the haul. I think most posters here probably do live within that distance from at least 2 others, we just don't know that unless a poster brings it up, say, posts someplace he goes, someone says, Hey, I go there, where you live, Joe?

Anyone wants to make a group buy would likely have to mention it and say they are from this general area, near this point, could meet with X people to divvy the purchase. That would be 2 or 3 people within 100 miles or so of each other, say 50 from a mutually convenient meeting point.

Could easily be did, BUT, 1 of the buyers would have to spring for the whole shipment and recover cost of the other's shares at the meet. Have to figure that out at the time of making an agreement.

2 guys say, Well, I can't free up 275 bucks, if you can swing it, we'll meet, pay you our 92 bucks apiece, take 8 cans apiece, you take the extra can for financing the deal. I'd think that fair.

I'm not looking for powder myself, just suggesting how some of you, heck, US, could do it, in my case sometime in future when I am running low..

Just have to bring it up, say you are from "here", in my case Pittsburgh, PA, general enough to not have people overrunning the place visiting, but specific enough that you could say, well, I'm just across the PA/Ohio/WVA border, 50, 60 miles, we could do a buy.

Heck, once you meet and talk, you might decide you like each other enough to get together sometime to shoot.

I don't know how many of you have BP shootin' friends. Most every post here is "I went...", as in by myself (except for BP Tess, her son gets to accompany her), or, on a few instances, "Well, I'm thinkin' of coming out that way to see kin folk...", "Well, bring your guns, I'm only half an hour away."

I know only one BP shooter, overheard him talking to my mechanic about shooting his .44, asked him what kind, figuring the same Ruger everbody seems to own. No, he shoots a Rem, happy to bring it in and show me. Got to BS'ing, went to school with his dad and uncles. His dad has his own range back in the woods, asked if I could get permission to shoot there, said he would ask his dad. Be nice, 2 miles away instead of the 15 to my club.

Talked too long, already.

Cheers,

George

I'm indifferent to the choice of various powders. Here in Lincoln, Nebraska I have only found Pyrodex for sale at the sporting goods store. The stuff goes "bang" when I pull the trigger, so it is good enough for me.

I haven't had a chance to try anything else, and it is tempting to see if there is any major differences or not, but I still think anybody would just get used to the stuff they're currently using and stick to it.

There is absolutely no cost effective legal way to get BP out here in Aleutian Hell, so I have no choice but to use subs.

So far I like the results I'm getting with Triple-7 I'm not going to mess with success and experiment with anything else until I move out this rain soaked blowhole.

So far, the substitutes are available here. The local distributor will stock them if he remember and its not too much trouble. Pyrodex comes the closest to predictably loading and behaving like black powder. It is a bit harded to ignite but in a clean chamber, this usually not an issue.

H777 is good but you have to be careful to compress it little if at all. Very much compression and the velocities spread out in the 200 fps range.

Black powder is kind of a bite the bullet thing. There is no reliable source of it within hundreds of miles of here. If you think you can drive to Austin and get it -90 Miles, you may be right and you may get to McBrides and find out that the employee authorized to unlock the powder safe is not there.

Only 150 miles to San Antonio. There is a place there that gets a few cans at a time but a cowboy action shooter usually buys it up as soon as it hits the door.

So, you bite the bullet and pay the hazmat{ and shipping) and it's not that bad a thing. You have to jump through the seller's hoops to prove that you are 21 years old. Then you have to camp near the door waiting for the ups truck to deliver it. They demand an adult signature and will send it back to the seller after three failed attempts to deliver. A while back, I bought 25 pounds from Clarksville Rod and Gun. It cost $250. I still have most of it left and have pretty much forgotten about the money.

My favorite was always Goex 3f but after it became harder to get I switched to Pyrodex"P" and it sells for about the same as Goex did around here. A while back I found 4 lbs. for $11.00 a pound from a dealer in Summersville WV. That's about 55 miles from me one way.
My choice in powder is two fold or maybe three,:) . I'm looking for a powder that will be consistent shot for shot, no problem with igniting and easy to get. Pyrodex"P" fits that criteria. Cost takes a back seat to all the above and just buying a powder because it works in my guns is not something I worry about. Most BP powders will go "bang" and send a projectile down range but not all will do it consistently or accurately from every BP gun.
The one powder I haven't tried yet in these revolvers is Swiss and I hope to do that soon but I don't see how anything could improve on what I have found with the Pyrodex"P". Mike

You can have real black powder delivered to your doorstep. No need to put up with fakes if you shoot enough to justify buying in quantity or have a group buy.
Most places sell only case lots but Powder Inc. will ship as little as 5 lbs. I get my Swiss from Maine Powder House for about $400 a 25 lb case delivered. Goex is less.

I've tried 777, goex and Pyrodex P and of the three I like the Pyrodex P the best. My guns shoot consistency with it and I get good accuracy and it seems to pack more of a punch than goex for $1 more in price, (when my local supplier used to still sell goex-he gave up selling real bp because of the regs).

I have another reason for buying pyro p also, my personal choice-you don't have to agree, check out hodgdons web page and scroll down to their mission statement. http://www.hodgdon.com/ it states:

Our mission is to provide quality propellants, other products, and services to sportsmen, governing units, and other businesses in a manner which enhances the quality of life for our stockholders, employees, customers, associates, and suppliers. In doing so, we will deal with integrity and honesty, reflecting that people are more important than dollars and that our purpose is to bring credit to our Lord Jesus Christ.

That's good enough for me and hodgdon will have my powder buying business from now on.

Are we switch`in to powder now ! i`m still trying to remember which nipples i like best ! :what:

Graf & Sons has Goex for $10.99 lb + $20 hazmat. I ordered 2 lbs. and UPS left it on my doorstep with no signature. If you ordered 8 lbs. it would cost $13.49 with hazmat included. Gasoline being $2.30 gal. in my area, I can't drive an hour and come out any better. Not to mention my time is worth something.

No doubt goex or any real black is best .. smells best , cleans just as easy .. and produces better smoke and fire . but being hard to find like where i live huge metro plex and one store to buy goex ( bass Pro ) and with 2 cowboy action clubs here it doesn`t last long . and after the muzzle loading season is over wal mart here sells whats left of the pyrodex for 9 bucks a can ... and i always keep an eye on it and buy a cart full every year . between me and the wife we shot 15 cans of powder and 60 lbs of lead last year . and thats with me casting the round balls , of course thats not just shooting the remmies .. we do all sorts of black powder matches , front stuffers to cartrage . Its a hobby that`ll keep ya busy for sure .. seems like i spend all my free time makeing round balls and cutting and lubeing patches or loading cartrages 45colt and now added 45/70 .gov.. don`t know where it ends ..

Great to read all of your opinions. It's too bad we have to have the hazmat fee. They punish the good people and the bad people are still doing things their way. Someday they'll try to take BP away from us all together! I can't help but remember all the history when I load powder on the range...no matter what brand...I feel privilaged to follow in their footsteps and light it up!
I'm not real close to any BP so I bite the bullet and pay hazmat. I enjoy Goex. I don't go through too much at once so 5lbs lasts me a while.:D

Nothing but real BP for my guns.

Goex FFFg and Cartridge sell for $12.00/lb in Orlando, and it's all of a 45 minute drive for me to get there. When I run out, I typically buy 3 or 4 pounds of the stuff, which lasts me a while when feeding a '74 Sharps and a couple '58 Remington revolver clones.

There's a reason most of the BPCR shooters stay with real black powder - it's consistent shot-to-shot, not that difficult to clean up (Ed's Red, hint, hint), and produces the proper smoke and smell. I've had so much fun with it in the short time I've had my .45-70 Sharps, I've started loading black powder for my Ruger #1 in .45-70, and my S&W 696 in .44 Special! That, and I'm getting real excited about using a spare military Rolling Block action and making that .40-65 I've always wanted - it will get fed real BP handloads, I guarantee! :D

That's good enough for me and hodgdon will have my powder buying business from now on.
Neat! Me too. I just bought my first reloading setup and I went to the store yesterday to get some bullets, primers and powder. I got CCI primers, Speer Gold Match 168gn .308's and a pound of Hodgdon's to reload my .300 win mag. :D
