Can some recommend a good bore scope based on positive experience? What should I look for as I shop around.

Eghads, the price of that Hawkeye!
If you can see down the barrel from the chamber end, there's no need for one.
Otherwise, there are some versions using a laser that fit in the barrel.
The old collator style works, too, with patience and understanding.

I don't think he is looking for a laser bore sighter.

He is looking for a bore scope to see inside barrels.

Thanks guys. Yes, I was looking for a bore scope, but don't want to mortgage my house to buy it. Looks like the new Lyman product may be an option. Or, as rc suggests, just do without it.

bore sighter

any bore sight will work bushnell has a fine one but I go another way after bore sighting I use my 25 yard range to sight in about 4" low and dead in the middle you will then be on the paper for sure at 110 meters . I do the 25 yard because our range does not dare to shot over the back stop I know someone will say the 25 yard is foolishness but it works for me an I can be safe deputy bruce

For the third time.

He is not asking about a laser bore sighter.

He is asking about a bore scope for inspecting the inside of a barrel optically.

A lot of it depends on exactly how much resolution that you want and how much you want to pay. Very basic borescopes that require attachment via usb cables to computers have 640 x 320 res or 1280 x 720 resolution are available at some pretty cheap prices on Amazon.

However, to use on in a 30 caliber barrel, you need the camera size to be 6.5 mm or below. The smaller the camera head, usually the lower the resolution offered or it is higher priced. I use a cheapie $40 one to check out old milsurp barrels for things such as washed out rifling etc, patches of dark spots etc. The resolution is adequate for finding relatively large problems in a barrel but not for example to determine throat condition as an example. I bought it originally to determine conditions behind drywall and to check the condition of a lawnmover's piston surface through the spark plug hole.

The Hawkeye is the best right now specifically for rifles etc. but just like Oehler's chrony, the king will be increasingly challenged by the better faster cheaper revolution in electronics. Lyman's new borescope the first shot over the bow at SRP 299.99 and I expect there will be others following.

Trueno,
How about a review? Have you used it on your rifle bores? Inquiring minds want to know. :)

Haven't tried it on a barrel, bought it to use with my honeybees. Had some bees in the eaves of the house for 3-4 years and decided to peek at em. It worked very well, comes with the hardware to download to your PC.

The light illuminates 8-12", closeup focus is great, made the bees look like giants from n old scary movie. Shop around on Amazon, bound to be some better prices.

I have an ancient Sweeny "SITE ALIGNER" which is comparable to today's offerings.
However, a bench session with the said firearm is an absolute necessity to insure accuracy.
You'd be surprised at the amount of guys who depend on the bore sighter only.

Are we trying to bore sight a firearm?
Yes we had a failure to communicate!
Sorry, didn't mean to laugh, but half the same thread is about bore inspection, the other half is about bore sighting. OP I believe was interested in inspecting. Someone attempted to clarify, but the thread went right to sighting again. :D

I can completely understand the first time when someone thought the OP was talking about a bore sighter. But after posts #4, #8, #9, and #12, you think people would get the idea...

Check out larrywillis.com. I bought one of them last year as I didn't want to spend the money on the hawkeye.

I bought it as he told me if I wasn't satisfied with it I could return it. It was around $300 and I have been very happy with it. I'm sure it isn't as good as the hawkeye, but it does what I want. I liked the fact that it has a flexible tube. You don't have to buy an angled eye piece and I believe it is more durable than the Hawkeye.

It's definately worth looking into. QM

Bore-scope

I have the Hawk-eye scope, unless you are in the business of gunsmithing it's too expensive. I learned a lot about what goes on inside a rifle barrel using mine, and could show the customer also. For me it worked great, still have it but sold all of my shop equipment, and retired. Al

I have two Hawkeyes, pistol and rifle.

Not only are they expensive but the prism tips are quite fragile and if a friend bends it all you have is a really, really expensive mini-mag lite.....:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

In my hands though, they've both saved and made me a lot of money.

Todd.
