The March of Folly continues

These people just don't think things all the way through, do they?

As stated above, it's time to start reloading. I should of been doing it for years now, but just have been lured by the ease of buying loaded ammo. Over the past few years there have been so many cockeyed ideas coming out of Boston it's not even worth getting worked up about.

For all of you guys that are talking about reloading, that wouldn't really help in this instance (unless it makes you more diligent in policing your brass). What's been proposed isn't serializing ammunition, it's requiring gun makers to micro-engrave the firing pin and/or breechface to stamp the gun's model and S/N onto the primer and case.

Of course, none of this applies to revolvers. Who wants to bet that there'll be a huge surge in the black market for wheelguns if this passes?

A pretty good bit of technical info on microstamping can be found in this document (if you can get past the anti BS, that is).

I am not too clear on how this would work. Under this type of thinking if I find a really good deal on some .45 acp ammo and decide to stock up on a years supply would I automatically be labeled a potential felon and have the NSA spying on me? Kind of a guilty by association thing.:scrutiny:

Talk about black market money to be made. Damm tempting to take up drug running with all the money there is to be made. (Heck, you can make a killing smuggling cigarettes.) Drive the speed limit, have a good cover story, and have your car in 100% working order. When will people learn.

You have never needed a license to purchase a black powder gun. However as long as I can remember, you need either an FID (firearms identification card) or LTC (license to carry) to purchase any ammo, or reloading components.

Adam

Adam is correct. You need at least an FID to buy reloading components. This is state law. The AG also has gone after out of state companies that sell Reloading componets to Mass residents. That is why no companies will ship powder, primers, cases or bullets to Mass.

Added: Also you do not need an FID to buy a Blackpowder rifle in Mass.

Reading comprehension

"i saw this earlier and was yelling at the tv i guess now is a good time to get into hand loading.

Aside from the lack of any attempt at punctuation, there is little effort to actually READ what the article said. Reloading is IRRELEVANT.

The proposal is to have the gun's serial number and manufacturer laser-etched on the firing pin or chamber so as to leave a readable print on the primer or case. That is NOT putting a serial number on new cases (the CA plan) and, therefore, negates any issue of reloaded v. factory ammo.

A little work with an emery cloth would also negate the laser etching upon which this imbecilic plan relies. However, reality never deters pandering politicians desperate to appear "tough on crime........"

Some companies will if you fax them a copy of your LTC. It pains me that not everyone will though.

Yes some companies will sell to Mass residents if they fax a copy of their license. My understand is that the AG has stated that a copy of the buyer's FID was not enough to sell ammo in state. He also wants the companies to have a Mass license to sell ammo, and the only way to get the license it to have a store in state. Until they setup shop here he will countine to sue them if they sell to Mass residents.

Um...? All your wheelgun are belong to us?

It's so sad a state that is so entrenched in our history of liberty is so backward now. How they forget that the British were coming to confiscate arms when the events that started our rebellion were triggered. I wish Smith and Wesson would leave the state.

NH really needs to put up a wall along the southern border to keep the crazies down there...

Of course, I found out one more "yay!" :barf: bit of news.
They're likely going to go ahead with the MBTA Commuter Rail extension to Nashua.

Which means that southern NH will be even more flooded with Boston leftists than it is now, not only driving up housing prices to beyond insane levels, but also likely putting pressure on anything to do with guns. (most all police calls on open-carry people are by MA residents who were 'alarmed' by seeing a gun) :barf:

Mumbles is a MORON, he has always been one, he's just looking for the media coverage to wich he is addicted. Of course the commie Globe will carry it for him.

Am I glad I left MA over 20 years ago. LIVE FREE or DIE.

Madness! Of course, we all realize that when they pass this law and the criminals continue to kill people they will blame neighboring NH, VT and ME for their 'lax' gun control laws flooding the market with illegal ammunition!

No. bet they will blame Georgia, and proclaim it the lead pipline. LOL

As it is, no gun dealer in Mass. can even sell ANY ammo to anyonewithout an FID or LTC, even if the person is from out of state or their for hunting.

I almost had to laugh when a Federal agent ( a _very_ attractive 20something Asian girl) was told that she couldn't buy a box of .40 at Four Seasons. At least the rules apply to them too.

Actually, in CA we had to fight off both of these proposal in 2005.
One requiring all semis to microstamp cases and another to require serialization of bullets matching cases and logging purchases. Along with them went all the attendant crimes of relaoding, hoarding and using emery cloth. (Defacing a serial # would have been a felony).

You make really good points. Criminals using revolvers can just keep their spent rounds.

As for the micro-engraving, this is an increadably stupid waste of money. How easy is it to just file off the serial # or replace the firing pin. The article you present even admits that this is a possability but says "most criminals are unlikely to take such measures." Yeah right, just like criminals don't take the measures to scratch off the serial numbers on the guns frame! The reason these measures don't work is because criminals are crafty and dare I say more intelligent than anti-gun control folks. They prove this by always staying a few steps ahead of those trying to catch them.

The only thing micro-emgraving is going to do is make guns and ammo more expensive for honest citizens. This attempt to price people out of the market is just a sneaky way to get the same effect as a outright ban.

Hahaha, I wish I could have been there to see that! :D

That won't be a problem. I'm sure the law will be worded to make that sort of tampering illegal too.

In MA, even a State Police officer, IN UNIFORM cannot purchase ammo without having his permit in his hand.

This here is one F'd up state, that's for sure!

That buzzin' sound you're hearin'...It's the Founding Fathers spinnin' in their graves.

As a sidenote...I live close to Lexington. The city of Concord is about 40 minutes away. Things are much better here in the cities named after the towns where America felt her first labor pains.

The scarcer ammo becomes the more valuable it gets. Remember the primer shortage we had a while back? I didn't waste ammo on targets and resorted to methods of hunting more likely to give one shot kills. Looks to me like they are fixing to trade off the reported increase in wounded for an increase in deaths. Gangsters killing gangsters isn't so bad in comparison to innocents being hit with stray shots though. Maybe they are on to something? :D
