Grandparents turn kid into police for a zombie story he wrote.

A George Rogers Clark High School junior arrested Tuesday for making terrorist threats told LEX 18 News Thursday that the "writings" that got him arrested are being taken out of context.

Winchester police say William Poole, 18, was taken into custody Tuesday morning. Investigators say they discovered materials at Poole's home that outline possible acts of violence aimed at students, teachers, and police.

Poole told LEX 18 that the whole incident is a big misunderstanding. He claims that what his grandparents found in his journal and turned into police was a short story he wrote for English class.

"My story is based on fiction," said Poole, who faces a second-degree felony terrorist threatening charge. "It's a fake story. I made it up. I've been working on one of my short stories, (and) the short story they found was about zombies. Yes, it did say a high school. It was about a high school over ran by zombies."

Even so, police say the nature of the story makes it a felony. "Anytime you make any threat or possess matter involving a school or function it's a felony in the state of Kentucky," said Winchester Police detective Steven Caudill.

Poole disputes that he was threatening anyone.

"It didn't mention nobody who lives in Clark County, didn't mention (George Rogers Clark High School), didn't mention no principal or cops, nothing,"
said Poole. "Half the people at high school know me. They know I'm not that stupid, that crazy."

On Thursday, a judge raised Poole's bond from one to five thousand dollars after prosecutors requested it, citing the seriousness of the charge.

Poole is being held at the Clark County Detention Center.

So let me get this straight. The grandpeople (parents doesn't seem to fit in this case) turn this kid in either not believing his story or not even confronting him first? Leave it to the nanny state. Certainly wouldn't want to try and raise some kids oureselves! :banghead:

This is a very scary story. Family members turning one another over to authorities, law enforcement arresting people not for actions but for thoughts alone. I have seen this before in history books. Protecting our first amendment rights is just as important (if not moreso) than standing up for our second amendment rights. One protects the other. Remember this! Always!

So when do they raid Blockbuster and the town library?

This kid could concievably clean up on a civil rights beef AND help expose how idiotic this zero tolerance crap is.

The rattling noise you hear is the dying gasps of the 1st Amendment.

I was always getting in trouble at school for my horrible evil stories and pictures of zombies. Sure glad they never called the cops on me.

Grandma and grandpa wouldn't be getting any more christmas presents or "help around the house" from me if they pulled a stunt like this.

Assuming the story is presented correctly.

If it's a crime to write a story about bad things happening, then they need to leave this boy alone and go arrest Tom Clancy.

How can writings in a private journal be considered a threat?

I guess the details on this will come out soon, but it sure sounds like the grandparents, the police, the prosecutor, and the judge are all acting like idiots and are ruining this kids life for no real reason.

Anytime you make any threat or possess matter involving a school or function it's a felony in the state of Kentucky

i guess by the letter of the law possessing homework is a felony.

oooo, what about all those calvin & hobbes books where calvin imagines dinosaurs destroying the school? or that hes a fighter pilot dropping bombs on the school?

I'd sure like to read what he actually wrote that scared the school and police so much.

Here are some other news stories about this. Note the quote "No direct threats were made against named people, Winchester police Detective Steven Caudill said" in the second story.

WINCHESTER, Ky. -- An 18-year-old high school student was in jail Friday, charged with threatening an armed takeover of his school.

William Poole, a junior at George Rogers Clark High School in Winchester, was arrested Thursday at school on a terroristic threatening charge.

The arrest came after a tip from a family member that Pool was trying to "recruit a gang to take over the school," Detective Berl Perdue said.

"He didn't have a gang, but he was attempting to organize one," Perdue said.

Police said writings in which Poole tried to persuade other students to take part in the takeover were found.

"We don't know who's included in this," George Rogers Clark Principal John Atkins said. "That's what we're working on, to see if there were other individuals involved. ... We're not sure that there are."

HERALD-LEADER STAFF WRITER

An 18-year-old junior at George Rogers Clark High School has been charged with terroristic threatening, a felony, after notes outlining possible acts of violence against students, teachers and security guards were found.

No direct threats were made against named people, Winchester police Detective Steven Caudill said.

William Poole of 426 East Broadway was being held on $5,000 bond today at the Clark County jail.

Caudill said Poole’s family was cooperating with police. Principal John Atkins said he received a dozen or so calls from concerned parents today.

Geez, did anybody else here sing a little school-house ditty to "The Battle Hymm of the Republic" ???

I don't remember all the words, just something about "... the burning of the school"

I just really had no idea we were a bunch of little terrorists back then ...

Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. We are watching. Re-education camps are next.
