Boy facing felony charges for zombie story.

I guess for some states George Carlin is going to have to add an eighth word to the proscribed list.

Since when is it a felony to even mention the 'S' word?

We no longer live in the United States of America, in fact we haven't been for a long time.

I remember reading Dawn of the Dead as a junior in high school during free reading time in class. I'd be a member of the poop creek canoe club these days!

Good, the police are finally cracking down on thought criminals. Its long past time we did something about these little Goldsteins in our schools. The best thing a family member can do is turn in a thought criminal- for their own good. Unless we all love big brother, there can be no harmony in society.

Seriously tho, I wrote stuff ten times more violent than this in JHS english class (in a NYC public school, no less). I think maybe 90 percent of my stories involved guns and murder, which are appropriate topics for normal 13 year old boys.

I probably wrote at least one zombie story. I would almost certainly have written a zombie story if I had seen 2004 Dawn of the Dead. That was a sweet movie.

How can a private diary be a terroristic threat? A threat requires communication, that's the whole point! The grandparents are disgusting rats, and the DA is a showboating menace. There's a circle of hell reserved for them.

Is everyone else missing the same bit of information that I am?

I understand that the grandparents were very wrong in turning a person in for something so harmless, but how did they see/hear of this writing in the first place?

Sounds to me like the person told his grandparents and expected them to do nothing. I'm not saying that he was wrong in assuming that, I would too. I guess America really is going down the tubes.

I remember reading The Making of the Atom Bomb in high school. I showed friends a Reader's Digest article on the "Radioactive Boy Scout" who messed with a bunch of stuff. No one ever fussed at me. I wrote a crappy little diddy to the tune of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" relating to weapons of destruction, both mass and small scale. I was just told by the teacher I probably shouldn't let some staff members see it.

If writing violent fiction in high school was a criminal offense, I would have been Charles Manson. What a bunch of hog wash.

Even so, police say the nature of the story makes it a felony. "Anytime you make any threat or possess matter involving a school or function it's a felony in the state of Kentucky," said Winchester Police detective Steven Caudill.
Attention Detective Caudill - be on the lookout for the numerous felons at your local library and video rental stores.

I'm vehemently opposed to the whole thought crime bit, but something doesn't add up here. There is the allegation that he was trying to organize a gang, and the fact that he is a functionally illiterate 18 year old junior. I've known some VERY dumb people with hearts of gold, but...

So, we're faced with a decision. We can either take the word of a kid who appears to be a blithering idiot, or we can take the word of a school administrator and a policeman, both of whom subscribe to the zero-tolerance nonsense, and have great interest in showing themselves in the best possible light. If any of them told me that the sky was blue, I'd run outside and check.

We don't need no mind control..

"Anytime you make any threat or possess matter involving a school or function it's a felony in the state of Kentucky,"
- Det. Caudill.

Well sir, I hope like hell you don't have in Your Possession any School Progams, list of functions, Security Details, Bus Routes...etc. According to Your statement that is a FELONY in KY.

Any Good Attorney's in or near Winchester, KY wanna see if Det. Caudill is in fact in possession of such items?

Arrrggghh... damned Enemies Foreign and Domestic . One of these days the Consequences are gonna be too Unintended - and it ain't gonna be pretty.

Phil Carson - where you be feller? ;)

I STRONGLY suspect that there is something very significant that we are missing here.

It is quite easy for me to believe that the law enforcement/government structure can at any time and any level behave in irrational and completely assinine ways but, this seems like a bigger wad of collective incompetence than is normal. Usually, by the time something gets this far up the ladder SOMEONE with some sense steps in to say something. Then again it isnt all THAT hard to believe that everyone involved is an idiot.

What gets me is this whole "terrorist threats" BS that we are getting overloaded with. it seems like this gets attached to half the cases i've seen lately. It just amounts to further proof that any law that is passed will be perverted as far as possible to apply to as many people as possible.

And I really have to wonder about the grandparents here. That whole situation sounds weird to me.

There's also the possibility that he really was attempting to plan something and the zombie story isn't related and the media is being themselves. I'd have to know more. When Columbine happened, everyone asked why the parents didn't get involved. In this case, it sounds like they did.

If the only evidence is a story, then we're in trouble. If its a story, plus a lot of other things, maybe not so much.

Reserving judgement based on lack of facts.

In the referenced media reports, the victim/perp is most often quoted. Do you really expect an 18 y/o to give a factual accounting?

One media report referred to a recruitment effort. Part of the story, or unrelated?

The "story" was in a journal; likely contained other information as well.

No, we're not getting a complete story here. I hope more facts are forthcoming.

Thought Police?

MAYBE. Maybe not.

There are HUGE gaps in the allegations being made. Did anybody notice that the cops were quoted as saying that this kid was "recruiting a gang" to "take over the school" but only in passing and only in one story?

Is it POSSIBLE that the press focused in on a sensational aspect of this story rather than covering it in a balanced way? Hard to believe, I know. The story may have been a very, very small part of the overall picture. And after all, none of us have read it, have we? We have only the boy's word for what it contained and didn't contain, and I notice he wasn't quoted as addressing any other allegation--only stuff regarding the story. Could that be because he feels on safer grounds denying that his story was a threat than denying that he had some really violent plans that are revealed by other evidence?

About as much as I can trust anyone named gary to give a factual reporting  (In that throwing out such a general, blanket statement like that is ridiculous)

I think it would be interesting to see what is written, and if there was anything past the story.

And I guess that they can't play 'School's Out For the Summer' on the radio in KY?

jefnvk, I'm sorry that you took offense at that statement. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to say "Do you really expect an 18 y/o, who is accused of a crime, to give a factual accounting". But I thought that's what we were talking about. back at you.

I think King should be arrested for Carrie and Christine . The O-BS is getting out of control . I can't belive this is happening in Ky. If I had the money I would go and bail the kid out. The fact the judge raised the bail is unreal. I hope that kid disowns his so called grandparents.

MICHAEL T,
The fact that the judge increased the bail is probably indicative of more going on than we are aware of. I sincerely hope that someone doesn't follow your thinking, only to find out that this was another Columbine in the making.

Go to Google and type in "Self Arrest Form" and choose from the selections that apper when you click 'enter'.

Perform your own strip search (or with your wife or girlfriend) arrest yourself, Mirandize yourself and go to the nearest lockup and surrender.

Coming to a location near you, sooner than you think!!! :D
