mainmech, sorry, no cigar.

In the 1920s in the Tennessee lege, a bill was introduced to make Pi = 3.000000 to make life easier for high school students. The mists of time cover the circumstances; it was most likely brought up as a joke.

Those legislators who were rather ignorant of math--my own jaundiced eye sees lawyers--apparently thought it was a Good Thing.

After much laughter, reality won the day...

Believe it or not, a good many legislators are really quite bright and quite funny--although they're outnumbered...

Example: We almost had legalized horse racing and betting in Texas over 50 years ago. A state senator from San Antonio introduced a "little ol' local bill to help veterinarians down along the border", written in Spanish. All went well for passage until somebody opposed to horse racing happened to read it and had the ability to read Spanish. Oops!

This is an interesting note on current events and society. Each era has its own quirks. The tenor of the time influences what things mean to the central person and those around.

Way back when I was a lad while in class I drew pretty good images of our elementary school being blown up with bricks and groups of bricks flying every which way in front of an awsome flash from bombs. I figured out how to set up a bomb that would go off when the school office door would be opened. No one at the elemenary school paid any mind to that.

Nor did anyone care that we kids rampaged all over the place with cap guns blazing, "killing" each other and imaginary foes.

On the other hand, pedal pusher pants in public were an outrage and later on the high school limited our sex information to amoeba reproduction lest we become Commies.

I never had real intent on bombing the school; I was extremely empathetic and caring of other people. I now know a bit about sex--more than Masters and Johnson it seems--and am on the conservative side of moderate rather than Commie.

Now the social scene focuses on the violence and maybe reduces the empathy, makes sex a commodity item. Wonder how this generation will fare and what will eventuate with the next swing of the pendulum.

Sorry Art; I stand corrected. Shows you what happens when you read things on the net without enough skepticism. The story I read also stated that the bill passed the lower house, but was 'killed' when it reached the upper.

Seemed pretty credible in light of the Scopes 'Monkey Trial' et al.

Having been personally acquainted with very few professional politicians, I'll defer to your more-experienced opinion. If there's any truth to what we see in the news, "outnumbered" would seem to be something of an understatement ;)

That ain't nuthin;

When I was in *elementary* school I had a shrink called in on me for some imaginative fiction I wrote. Thank the Lord, back then they didn't involve the cops in such silly nonsense.

Kinda funny: If I'm such a dangerous lunatic, how come I've been in maybe 4 fistfights in my entire life, 3 of them a consequence of being jumped by bullies, and the other the result of having been so insufferably provoked that I just went for the guy?

My English teacher thought I was advanced for being able to get the reader to like my characters just before killing them off.

Of course I think that there is more to this than a simple story. MolonLabe's post adds some light to the whole thing I think.
