An associate of my recently purchased a Browning High-Power MkIII 9mm. Before I get to my query, I have to state that it is the sleekest, all-around sexiest piece I have shot in some time. It is smooth, the recoil is gentle and it is certainly every bit as accurate as I am and more. Having gotten that out of the way...

We were not sure if it can handle any hot loads and assumed not. However, poking around on the Buffalo Bore ammunition website I discovered some 9mm+P+ 147gr. ammunition < http://www.buffalobore.com/ammunition/default.htm#9mm > and it specifically mentions the BHP MkIII, quoting a decent 1179ft/second. Does anyone know anything about putting +P+ 9mm like this through the High-Power MkIII? Apparently its possible, so is this a bad idea in any way? Anyone care to comment on this pistol and/or the Buffalo Bore ammunition?

Generally speaking the BHP was not made with +p ammo in mind. The spring is to weak to handle the recoil. To help this get a BHP +10% spring for the high power, by wolf, or get a weak .40 cal. There is also a buffer you can add to help reduce the impact.

Here is a great link to someone who has tested this theory,

PS the new cast frame is stronger then the old forged frame. They make all of the frames cast now, because of the .40, and can now handle +p with ease. So you are safe.

Heres a link about 147gr on the same website

I put wolf 18.5 springs in my mk111, with no ill effects. The newer hp's are stronger than the earlier ones. Even with the heavier spring it still functions flawlessley with standard pressure ammo.

I do NOT buy the claim that the BHP can't handle hot loads. If anything, mine all seem to like warmish loads better. Ya gotta remember, this was/is one of the standard NATO pistols, and NATO ammo is essentially +P.

Now, that said, ANY ammunition higher than standard pressure will produce more wear in ALL guns. Personally, I think Buffalo Bore's stuff is just plain psychotic-hot. I wouldn't run it in my HPs... FWIW.

If this is +P+ ammo I'd expect accelerated wear and tear on the pistol if it was the only ammo shot. A box or two no big deal.
