What if you were very close to possible retirement with that Toyota?
Actually, I am four years away from retiring. I don't plan to replace that vehicle until it needs it. I would not hesitate to drive it cross country if the need presented itself.....If I had $5k thrown at me that I had to spend, it would likely not be on something that depreciates, especially if I didn't have to have it. If I absolutely had to spend the money, I would likely stick it in guns that have a track record of appreciating in value.

When I get my bonus, and our tax refund, my wife and I each take 25% for our individual hobby accounts (personal money that can be spent on whatever we want without questions asked - for me, guns/ammo/hunting equipment, for her usually shoes and clothes). 50% goes into our savings.

This division of extra money differs from my overtime money, which is split 5% to each of us for hobby and 90% to savings. We also each get $75 a month even when there isn't overtime.

In an average year, we each get around $3,500 of fun money. This doesn't go as far as I wish it did when it comes to guns, ammo, and hunting gear!! Although, we save many tens of thousands of dollars for stuff like, houses and education, and with a strict budget like we follow, there is never any guilt associated with an expenditure. We make sure to build in money for dates and hosting events.

Well i am in dire need of a new car, so i'd spend 2000-2500 on a used jeep and the rest on a savage 110 in .308, a ruger 1911 and reloading supplies. It just so happens i get a little over 4000 back from taxes and i'm doing exactly that, then selling my camaro and buying a new ar-15.
