A Baytown man was shot and killed early Saturday when a bystander caught him breaking into cars at a southeast Houston apartment complex, police said.

Hector Faz, 23, was allegedly burglarizing cars in the 8400 block of Winkler at 3:40 a.m. when someone yelled at him to leave, witnesses told police. When Faz refused to get off the property, the person yelling at him shot him in the buttocks, homicide investigators said.

Faz then jumped into his own car and drove two blocks down the street before crashing into a residence, police said. The bullet that pierced his buttocks was found to have exited his body through the upper groin, police said.

Faz, of the 400 block of South Road, died at Ben Taub Hospital. Police have not determined who shot him.

What a way to go.

As much as I hate to see someone die over property, it was nighttime - so this was a legal shoot under Texas law, yes?

Even if it was legal, it still wasn't reasonable SD.

Too Bad

Here in the great state of WI I do not believe I can legally shoot someone for rummaging around in my car. The next thing is I don't know if I could shoot that person in good conscience. I have clearly stated in past threads that whenever I hear about stupid criminals getting shot in the process of their crimes it makes me laugh. I just don’t know if I would want to be the person that puts the lights out. If you shot someone that was stealing your car would it bother me??? HELL NO if you feel that you need to protect your property then go for it.

My decision is that I will only use deadly force if I am in fear of my life, or the life of another human being.

Your opinion ...

My opinion too. The punishment should fit the crime, and theft does not deserve death. I'm not going to shed any tears, but I'm also not going to pretend that it was a righteous thing to do.

"..being shot in the buttocks could not be fatal.."

I know this was said in jest, but there are a lot of blood vessels in that area. Through and through shot. A lot of nerve endings too, I hear. Eeeesh! :uhoh:

being shot in the buttocks could not be fatal

Through and through wound piercing the femoral artery along the inner high probably... a Type 2 incapacitation; LOC from blood loss leading to death.

I agree that I can't shout from the rooftops 'RIGHTOUS SHOOT'; this punk was 23, well old enough to be responsible for his actions though so I won't shed a tear at his passing. I suppose his cronies never related to him the potential down-sides to this line of revenue enhancment...

I was thinking it hit the femoral artery too, I think that artery is at least as big as a quarter in diameter. Lose a lot of blood really fast through it.

People get killed all the time for resisting arrest, but that is okay I guess.

Heh, I guess you haven't read any of my posts in threads about questionable police shootings. In short, no, it's not ok, it's an unpunished crime.

if the bullet did exit his groin, maybe the perp ended himself?

Anyway, there's a reason that you should carry non-lethal options (like pepper spray)--for non-lethal situations (duh).

Otherwise, you can insult the guys mother until he does attack you.

Until police find the killer, how could this be called self defense? Sounds to me, on the surface, that he may have been breaking into cars and was murdered.

Imagine, ammo makers with no clue as to fighting.

More like ammo makers using a lot of technobabble and BS to get around actual testing. What was the argument again? "Our round is so special that the testing that works for all other rounds won't work for it." Of course, said ammo maker has explained that he doesn't even understand how his stuff does what it does. Whoops.

As for the shooting, it's kind of poetic that one pain in the butt eliminates another one.

If you commit property crimes in Texas at night expect to be shot.

Its the cost of doing business.

Even though there is a mention of protecting property in TX law it is not absolute.

What that means is this shooter could face serious time for his actions. Also consider that this case could easily land in court in Houston (A very Major metropolitan area) with big city attitudes.

Be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Smoke

edited to add: Pelvic girdle is very good shot palcement.(even if you go into it backwards) :) Odds are very good he will go down even if not killed. Bust the pelvic bones and he won't walk. Sever one of the major arteries in there and he will bleed out quickly (probably the case here). Lots of nerves in there too.

Whew. The way I see it, the thief was given the chance to leave and refused. He deserved everything he got.

Good riddance.
