There is a theory that the commander (Peckingham?) relied on intell from captured spies that the portion of the lines he attacked were lightly defended. Since I wasn't invited to his planning session it's really not for me to say why he sent those men into that part. It could be very well that, like the charge of the light brigade it was a just a tragic blunder.

Yeah, unfortunately their commander knew how to march around an ambush, but refused to because of his pride...
