Can a pistol Under $600 be worth trusting your life on?

Awe Yes! I cried because I had no shoes, then I saw a man who had no feet!

there is no pistol that cost under $600 that you can trust your life with
When you don't have a whole lot of experience with firearms, that kind of statement seems like a grand thing to say.

Utter baloney, of course, but it sounds wise and knowledgeable -- especially to the one saying it! ;)

ANY gun that you can and will carry (have it with you when you need it!) and that you have tested for reliability is one you can "trust your life with."

None of my pistols cost $600.00

Glock 23 - $525.00 (new)
S&W 442 - $350.00 (new)
S&W 642 - $350.00 (new)
S&W 13-3 - $300.00 (used)

So a couple of guys at work and i were talking about pistols and the comment was made by both "there is no pistol that cost under $600 that you can trust your life with"

Generally a statement made by bored people in the workplace who don't even have a gun

Dang, I just bought a police trade-in G23. Before taxes, it was less than 300 bucks. If it takes 600 bucks to keep me safe, I might need to call up the gun store tomorrow and tell them I need another one for back up.

TOTALLY NOT necessary my friend, simply buy or reload $300.00 worth of ammunition for your new acquisition and it suddenly rises to the "worthy" level, lol !!!

I have a Smith & Wesson M637 that was less than $600.00. I paid less than $600.00 for an FN-Herstal FNP9 and just over $500.00 for a Beretta PX4 Storm. I regularly stake my life on the Smith snubby and the Walther PK380 that was far less than $600.00. New were all purchased new.

Sounds like your co-workers have been listening to those "urban myths."

Ruger P95, less $300. Trust my life with it? Any day of the week.
As said already, there are so many guns out there costing less than $600 that you can stake your life on, that I can only conclude that your coworkers were talking out of theirs asses.

I agree completely that the price issue is nonsense. Despite what the guy at the range with the $2,000 custom H&K will tell you, there are LOTS of solid, reliable guns that you can get for under $500 new, nevermind $600, and even more if you consider used guns. It's hard to cite specific models without knowing exactly what you want (concealed carry, large or small caliber, semi-auto or revolver, etc.). Here are a few that I personally would consider to cover the range of possibilities (priced between $350 and $500 according to Impact Guns), many American-made. Your mileage may vary!

38SP/357MAG
S&W 642 38SP+P
Ruger LCR 357 MAG
Ruger SP101 357MAG

9MM (some also available in .40)
Ruger P95 or SR9 various models
CZ75 various models
Kahr CW9
Springfield XD various models
Glock 17/19/26

45ACP
Ruger P90 or P345 various models
Springfield XD45 various models
Kahr CW45

That's one of the most ridiculous statements I have heard in a while--its almost to the point of not being worth dignifying. Your buddies are truly talking out their arses.

"Under $600" would likely include the vast majority of all pistols issued to police and military around the world.

The statement might only get interesting if it were <$300.
+1 here. Those people are idiots. While I wouldn't advise even my worst enemy to buy a Jennings or Lorcin, I've had dozens of guns under $600 that I would trust my life to. And I've had some (not many because I can't afford them) over $600 that I wouldn't. I honestly suspect that the people you were talking to have very little, if any, PERSONAL experiance with handguns.

Ask them what the basis for their opinion is. $600 is a pretty arbitrary number to pull out of one's, erm, head. Why isn't it $300? $400? $750? $2691?

What makes $600 the magic number?

All in all, money is not a factor at all in whether or not a gun is worth betting your life on. That boils down to basically reliability and accuracy. Both can be found in guns SIGNIFICANTLY under $600 (heck, under half that).

To put it simply, the US armed forces field the Beretta M9 and the vast majority of police forces in the country issue Glocks (mostly Glock 22's). Both can be found for under $600 brand new.

The day bad guys start asking for a receipt and proof of purchase this might change - until then, use guns that work, not guns the "cost enough".

maybe they get their prices from Bass Pro! :)

Bass Pro in my area is competitive with the local gun stores. The Gander Mountain that is about a mile away from Bass Pro and the local gun store is about 20% higher on just about every thing.

I think the guys you work with like paying too much for some things. I bought my Kel-Tec P11 for under $300 and it has NEVER failed to feed, eject or fire. I carry it every day wherever I go. Customer service has been great too. I lost the mag base plates after putting on finger extensions, Kel Tec sent me 2 more for free. They paid the shipping and everything. I have been wanting a full size for carry but not because I do not trust the P11.

Not all guns are created equal so there is something to say about price point, but $600. is a bit high to me because I buy $500. guns mostly. Normally I don’t buy guns below the Mendoza line but I broke that rule with a sweet Colt Frontier Scout of 1962 vintage so now I never say never. ;)

There are a lot of pistol/revolvers under your price range that fill the bill imho...:D

Much has already been mentioned, just thought I would give a decent reply to your question;)

So a couple of guys at work and i were talking about pistols and the comment was made by both "there is no pistol that cost under $600 that you can trust your life with" What is your do you think of this statement and if you think its false what would you suggest for pistols under $600???
The simple fact that just about any Glock can be found new for less than $600 puts lie to that statement. There are any number of quality, reliable pistols and revolvers available for less than $600, often quite a bit less if you include used or refurbished guns.

(I was looking at a taurus 24/7 G2 is it a good choise?)
You should probably hold out for some actual first hand reports on this gun. There is a lot of buzz on the internet about QC issues from Taurus, but not having a Taurus gun myself I can't comment one way or the other.

That statement is totally WRONG!!! there are many guns for under $600 that you can trust your life on. There are some over $600 that arent worth the material they are made of.

+1

The percentage of guns I've had over $600 with reliability issues is much higher than for those under $600.

Of course, that it largely due to their design and intended purpose as target guns, and they certainly do shoot better than the less expensive service guns. But the point remains.

$600 is on the high side of average retail for new service/combat type pistols from reputable makers.

Not one of my carry guns cost anywhere near $600. Granted, I got one helluva deal on my CS-45 at $270, but the rest didn't even have MSRP's in excess of $600.

Here's the other way to look at it: How much do you want to spend on a gun that you may never see again (or will likely be abused horribly before you get it back) if you ever actually have to use it for it's purpose?
