Can a pistol Under $600 be worth trusting your life on?

Not all guns are created equal so there is something to say about price point, but $600. is a bit high to me because I buy $500. guns mostly. Normally I don’t buy guns below the Mendoza line but I broke that rule with a sweet Colt Frontier Scout of 1962 vintage so now I never say never. ;)
OK, I'll bite, could you please explain "the Mendoza line" to me?

That's one of the most ridiculous statements I have heard in a while--its almost to the point of not being worth dignifying. Your buddies are truly talking out their arses.

"Under $600" would likely include the vast majority of all pistols issued to police and military around the world.

This. $600 or less will get you a new Glock, M&P, XD, FNX, SR9/40, Ruger Revolver, etc. Come on now. That's nuts.

The statement might only get interesting if it were <$300.

Not really, if you can buy used guns or milsurp. Used k-frames are well under $300. Comm-bloc pistols are from $170-$230 these days, and are dead reliable.

$400.00 for a used Glock 26 with less than 100 rounds down the pipe. Came with original box, an extra magazine, two magazine extentions, a Fobus paddle holster and a partial box of ammo. Goes bang! every time.

I'm in trouble. My xd was $425 and my recent kahr pm9 was $500. Xd has never given me any problems with around 6k rounds through it. Pm9 stovepiped once in the first 50 rounds. It has over 300 now. It's a fulltime carry pistol not a range toy.

It can be hard sometimes to find a decent one under $400 - IMHO, only the Ruger P95 and Stoeger Cougar 9mm are the only decent 9mms under $400 I would own (I don't buy used guns).

Under $600 - damn, that opens up all sorts of possibilities. Many guns are $499 or so before taxes. I have 9 Berettas (eight 92s and a PX4). Over 1/2 of those were under $600, and the rest were under $630 plus tax.

Better sell my XD40 and get a HK MK23 because I'm defenseless with my XD in comparison to the HK.

Your assailant will not check your receipt before succumbing to his wounds. That having been said, I would not trust my life to any gun without a thorough test regardless of price.

False, even talking new prices.

I potentially trusted my life to my $500 Ruger P90. I would also trust my $500 Ruger SP-101, my $350 (new) Charles Daly Hi-Power, and my $300 Bersa 380.

It's just a matter of experience and open-mindedness.

Nope, it won't work. Here's a good recipe though:
$400 Glock+$200 Class+$100 9mm ammo.=trusting your life with. $700.

It's not the hardware, it's the software between your ears that is your true life saver. Training WITH your Glock/M&P/SIG with qualified Instruction is priceless. Keep up the training for maintaining your gains is up to you.

You can talk firearm brand name, FMJ and JHPs, and bolt on accessories all day long here if you want to.(That's hardware.) Training and range-time preparing your brain for the pistol operation with a conflict is software. Get some.

And don't forget the lowly Sigma!
Owned a few over the years-moved on (although I wouldn't necessarily say UP) to the usual name dropper brands/models, but saw no reason to replace my Sigma as my bed gun. It works, I can hit where I aim, and despite all the whining 'bout the trigger, learn how to use it and don't be surprised if you find yourself having better trigger control with all your guns.

I think I got mine for around $240-think they had a $50 rebate and they were giving away some nifty $40 to $60 range/duffel bags.

You mention you are looking at a Taurus 24/7 g2. I say, if you like the way it feels, and will practice with it.... get it. It's a good gun. For the money its a good value. Some have great experiences with their Taurus (myself included), and some don't.

Figure out what you want out of a pistol... there are tons of options to fit different needs/budgets. And check maker specific forums for more feedback about a particular weapon.

I purchased a 24/7 pro c DS .40 about 3 months ago for $340 OTD. As for people saying they are unreliable... I disagree....600 trouble free rounds. I really enjoy it, and would trust my life to It any day. Check. Taurus armed. net

Good luck in your seArch for the right purchase.

Yet, you likely own quite a few. I've never been able to fathom the aversion to purchasing used on something that lasts as long as a gun.

That's a whole other topic... And yes, I know companies function tests guns.

But no, I won't buy them. I've had a few headaches with new guns, and seen WAY too many new gun headaches for others. I'd rather have the warranty and have a new gun.

I rarely buy a range gun for range use only. So, I use them for defensive purposes. Too many knuckleheads do stupid stuff to their guns. Not everyone, but enough... I just get the bad vibes when it comes to used guns.

I never buy used. Never have and never will... And, there are some online who have the same opinion...

But, if others didn't buy used, then I could never sell the guns I have sold to pay for other guns... And, I am happy for those that do. But, we all have our own preferences and opinions. Nothing wrong with that...

Ah, if we were getting down to under $200 price range the we'd be in a whole different thread:

  • Hi Point 9MM or 45ACP
  • CZ-82 9x18MM
  • Radom P-64 9x18MM
  • Hungarian P-63 9x18MM
  • Nagant M1895 7.62x38R
  • Kel Tec P3AT 380ACP
  • Walther SP-22 22LR
  • Cobra Freedom FS380 380ACP
  • or whatever you can find cheap at the local pawn shop, likely an old 38SP revolver
With those options, I'd likely go with a Hi Point for the caliber and the warranty, or one of the Eastern Bloc pistols for durability. The Nagant is not very effective but it will last forever, which is a point in its favor.

If I were that low - I'd spend a tiny bit more. Stainless Ruger P95 can be had for $310-$320. A blue slide on a P95 can be found for $285-$295. That's the cheapest defensive gun I'd buy. I don't think there is any $200 price range gun I'd want.

I currently own 4 pistols, none of them cost me more than $600. That includes a NIB Springfield XD 45 Compact, which I've yet to hear labelled as unrealiable to trust your life on or what not. Either your friends are WAY overpaying for firearms or they're simply gun snobs.

Are they using the Hong Kong Dollar? If using US dollars they are smoking something.
$600 US will get you into any number of fine handguns that one could safely defend themselves with. With a bit of smart shopping you can go well below that and come away happy.
Taurus may or may not qualify due to qualty issues.

There are plenty of good reasons to stay away from used weapons in general. Ever been to a range? Take a look at the way some people treat their firearms. That's enough for me to stay away from the random used guns I see in shops. I don't generally buy used firearms, but I won't tell anyone not to buy used either. Someone has to. ;)

I hope the $450 I spent wasn't a bad decision....I have never owned a weapon that costs over $500....Ruger SR9 for me.
