I wast gonna vote ,but then I realized that I already dont trust my life to a auto loader. so I voted .357mag but .38 would do just fine.
any of those rounds will kill for sure, but I have doubts if auto loader will cycle in that clutch moment, I know my revolver will.

none of my revolvers have ever failed me, every auto loader I ever owned has atleast once failed to feed/eject. my best auto has only done it once out of over 3,000 rounds but still it happened.

I believe in using the most powerful ammo that I can handle. I carry .45 ACP and 10mm. I've provided .40 S&W platforms to my adult children since they handled that caliber nicely.

(Have someone fix the forum software to divide my the number of votes, not the number of voters. That will present correct percentages in single and multiple choice polls.)

None of the above, M2 Browning belt feed heavy machine gun .50BMG with 750gr hollow points and a tripod mount, but since I cannot carry that in a hip holster I will settle for a XD 40 cal

oldfool, the OP intent of this polled thread was not to discuss the merits of each caliber's effectiveness as that's been done on multiple threads ad nauseam but to simply gather THR members' general consensus.

I still say there should have been an "all of the above" not just you can select multiple choices. I believe the OP specifically did not want this option because he suspects it would have been the most popular choice and this would not have fit in with his agenda. That which is .380 is not suitable for SD, which he has also stated at ad nauseam......

No option for 7.62 Tokarev/7.63 Mauser. It is lot better than 9mm and it's comparable to .357 Magnum.Prvi factory ammo travels at about 1700+ fps (tokarev) and at 1509 fps (mauser).

I would be ok with any of those calibers. The delivery system is more important to me. It doesn't matter how good the caliber is if I can't hit with it or depend on it. I voted for the 38 special. It is my favorite all around caliber.

I roll with a 10mm.

I also have a .45ACP, and a 9mm guns and would feel fine using any of them to defend myself with, but I feel best with the 10.

depends on what's trying to take it from me and how many of them there are to deal with ... but then we'll never know that till it happens :scrutiny:

if it's some lonesome scumbag and he's a boot right thar in front of me and I can pop it with a head-shot then I for one can handle that double-tap with my .380/LCP up and out too about 20ft

if it's a * bare * :what: ... then I'm with sugar ... then OO-buck is in order which isn't listed = but y'all know how these here threads roll

so I vote all the above > placement + placement + placement = sanctimony ;)

Sorry, the poll was intended for popular "conceal carry" pistols so no 12 ga shotguns and BMG.

On second thought, should have included 9x18, 7.62x25, 44 Special and 410. So apologies to carriers of these calibers.

I'm going to have to take issue with the premise....or at least the wording.
Theoretically, I "would" trust my life to just about any repeating firearm, especially if I had no other option.

I think the pertinent question is..."what do you trust your life to, day in, day out"?

That takes us from the theoretical to the real. I trust my life to the guns I actually carry every day. They are .45 acp, .45LC and occasionally 10mm or .41 Mag.

Once or twice per year (each) a .357 Mag, 9mm or .380.

Any of them.
However, I entrust my life to ME, not a particular firearm caliber.
But you did omit three commonly carried by many people: .22rimfire, .32acp, and .25acp .

Caliber wars are mildly entertaining.

OP intent of this polled thread was not to discuss the merits of each caliber's effectiveness"

understood, and I was not discussing effectiveness, only that choices will vary (of course); it would be truly odd if they did not.
Predictable that lighter calibers are ok with some, but not for everyone, no surprise in that. Hence predictable poll distribution

No criticism of anybody's choices implied; merely no surprise in poll results.

I trust any of them on the list. Hell I'd trust .32ACP which isn't (though I do draw the line past .32ACP as to something I'd choose by choice - if I happened to find myself in a bad situation though with a .22LR handy it still is better than nothing though).

Realistically, I normally CARRY a .380. Its small and conceals well. If open carry was legal in this state and I didn't have to worry about anyone spotting the gun (ie, I could flip a shirt over it but it didn't matter if it became visible periodically while bending down or reaching up), then I'd probably carry a full-sized 9mm.

Looks like I need to politely bow out of this thread also and let other THR member discuss the matter further.

Maybe too early to tell but so far about 200 poll samples.

Thanks!

When I first saw this I thought it said "WIFE" instead of "life" and thought, "Well, whatever she wants I guess!"
