Hello,
I am planning on transferring my driver’s license over to a Texas driver’s license tomorrow morning and would also like to purchase a long gun this weekend. I do not believe the temporary license will have my picture on it but just be a piece of paper containing my address and stating that I have a TX license coming in the mail. I am in a hurry because me and a couple of friends have some land to dove hunt on, but I’m the only one without a shotgun and hoping to remedy that as soon as possible ;) . I just wasn't sure whether I needed to have the actual picture ID license or just needed to be in their system. Thank you for your time.

They should leave you with your old state DL. Here in Texas, when you change your address, they cut off the part that says "State of Texas" and leave you the picture and info part of the card.

Still usable for picture ID, but not an "official drivers license" any longer (you have the paper temporary for that).

nalioth, I was under the impression that when I get my Texas drivers license that I would need to turn in all forms of identification from the previous state (at least that’s what it says on their website).

wdlsguy, yes I do have a passport but it is at my parents house back in NY, so I could get it if need be, but for the moment I do not have it. The passport was done when I lived in NY and has all of my old information on it.

Again their is no real rush and it seems like it will be a complicated thing so maybe I'm better off just waiting the couple of weeks for the actual hard copy although it will be a loooooooooooong wait :cuss:

I bet it depends.

I bought a nice 6" GP100 with a temporary MT license last year.

... a purchaser may be identified by any combination of government-issued documents which together establish all of the required information: Name, residence address, date of birth, and photograph of the holder.

A passport has everything you need except a residence address. Whether a given FFL will accept a passport plus a temporary driver's license is a separate question.

That’s interesting wdlsguy, do you think my old NY drivers license would be allowable as a photo ID and then use my temporary TX DL to show my new permanent residence? It looks like I may have to get a hold of my passport and hope it will work. Thank you for all of the information wdlsguy, it's been really helpful and I really appreciate it.

I believe TX DPS will take your NY DL when they issue your temporary TX DL.

For some reason I think I remember something about a requirement for 30 days of state residency, but I may be confusing that with the CHL requirements...

A call to a local shop or the local ATF office will clear it up for you.

As wdlsguy posted, I wouldn't accept the temp. lic. as your only ID to purchase a gun, but if you had a combination of other gov't issued ID that added up to a picture, name, residential address, and date of birth that would work.

IIRC they may need two forms of ID with your current address on it...ie car registration or voter card. Every gun show or store I've been to asks for it. My CC permit doesn't even work anymore as it has my old VA address on it.

arthurcw, my old DL was from NY and I had tried once already to buy a shotgun on it at Cabela's, but the guy went and looked it up and told me that they couldn't accept a NY license. They also took my NY license today when I got my temporary TX DL so that counts that out...I also just registered to vote in texas today so its going to be two to three weeks before I get my TX DL and my voters registration papers. Eh it's ok...I'll just wait for all of it to go through to avoid the hassle. Thanks for all of your help.

Sorry to here that. We need to send a transcript of this thread to DC.

"SEE!!! Good guys obey the law. If he was a bad guy do you think he let a little thing like “lack of ID” stop him?"

Tell one of your buddies that he needs a brand new shotgun because his it just too old. But you will be happy to use his cast off for a while because you ain't proud. You're doing it for his own good. Really. He can't be seen with that old ratty thing.

Might work?

Had a FFL deny my ability to purchase because my DL addy no longer matched my real addy (i did a lot of moving for a while there, i'd almost welcome having to renew the bloody thing every year, mail sent to my old dl addy still gets to me) at any rate... if you have Photo ID (old license) and temp license "technically" you should be good no? BUT, its any proprietors right to not sell something to you, so in the end - who knows. Not sure i'd take the chance if it was my store.
