It might seem like a silly question, but it will make me feel safer if I knew the answer before I tried it.

I have a 3", 3"chambered judge. The only 3" shells I can find are weak birdshot. I found some federal personal protection shells made for the Judge, but they are 2.5". Is it safe to shoot them in my gun?

Yes.

Chambered in 3" shells indicates that shells of any length at or below 3 inches (measured fired) are safe to use and will work just fine.

yep, no problelmo.

The new Federal stuff works pretty good. The pattern on the 000 buckshot is much tighter at distance than the Winchester X, kind of a vertical string. I'm still trying to decide if that is better or not ...

YES

Shooting a 2.5" 410 shotshell in a 3" 410 chamber is no different than shooting a 2.75" 12GA shotshell in a 12GA shotgun with a 3" chamber.
