Gun comes out of pawn.
First thing I do is clear it, clean it and photograph it for sale. Part of the photographing it is going through the case or box if it has one and inspecting any additional magazines and parts to see if they go to the gun mainly.
Smith Bodyguard 380 comes out with a second mag in the little pocket in the soft case. Pull mag out of the case to inspect it and this:

His snazzy paint job on the mags (And trigger. Don't ask) should have given me a clue about the owner, but, whatever.

I did the opposite one time, and .40 will fit into a .45 1911 mag. I was stuffing mags while talking and somehow ended up with one in there. Fortunately when the slide cycled, the entire round went right through the barrel and onto the ground. Never owned a 40 in my life so I still never figured out how it got in there.

I don't know if this guy had been chatting like Howland937 had been, but I'm undecided as to whether I'd really want to know.

maybe one of these new gun owners i keep reading about, who bought and havent taken any training yet?

maybe a good thing he pawned it before something bad happened.

Real operators have zero tolerance for gun failures. No excuses. One failure and the gun has to go

That's a strong statement. I disagree. Give it some time. May not be the gun. Yes, I know you confined your comment to gun failure, but still, ammo, manual failure, gun failure, whatever, are not uncommon especially with certain pistols. I have pistols which I've fired successfully thousands of rounds with no failure. Once in awhile something happens. I don't worry. I make a note of the magazine I'm using, the ammo and everything else I can think of to identify the issue and go from there. I agree a defense pistol should be as reliable as possible. But, things happen. Perhaps inaccurate or little cleaning, not enough or too much lube, etc.

maybe a good thing he pawned it before something bad happened. Really? Why? To whom is it a good thing?

I've seen a woman load rounds backwards. We came out to qualify for CCW and the brought her husband's double-stack Para 1911. Most applicants were visibly nervous.

Ahhh the HK load.

The poor SOB sits in a bar every night muttering “Never F’ up, not even once...LISTEN TO ME NEVER EVER SCREW UP I TELL YOU!!” To anybody that will listen. :)

Good ol rattle can or model paint. Those touches add 20FPS to the bullet velocity. This may be seen as more evil by the law makers.:p

After seen his painting skills. I wonder how much dip in oil the prior owner kept his guns.
