Captain America Lives! Hero to Return in 2008

The new Captain America.

NEW YORK — You can't keep a good American down.

Marvel Entertainment announced Thursday that its slain hero Captain America will rise again with a new outfit and a new secret identity, after the character was killed off in March by a sniper's bullet in a storyline on the War on Terror.

The company unveiled the patriotic superhero's new look Thursday with artwork by Alex Ross and Steve Epting for the new issue, No. 34, to hit comic book shops in January 2008.

Captain America will return with his trademark shield, but he also will have some new firepower. The artists are bringing the hero back with a gun.

"I always try and look back in the character's history to something that maybe was a forgotten costume element from a bygone age, maybe one of the earlier costume elements, to see if you could bring that part back," Ross told Marvel.com. "Well, funny enough, there's this awful movie serial made in the '40s with Cap where he had no shield, no wings on his mask, no white sleeves, little tiny gloves, and he carried a gun."

While the famed hero is returning to fight the good fight, Marvel made clear that the original character, Steve Rogers, remains dead. A yet-to-be-revealed character will don this new Captain America suit.

In March, Dan Buckley, the president and publisher of Marvel Entertainment's publishing group, told FOXNews.com that Captain America's return was a possibility.

"Everything is possible in the world of make-believe."

i'm not into comics but i'm sure surprised (in a good way) that a new super hero will be toting a pistol. hopefully it will convey the image and the notion that GOOD guys carry guns too.

I wonder if it'll be an American pistol.

As much as I like Glocks, they seem wrong for Captain America. And he'd need something with more capacity than a 1911. Maybe a S&W M&P or 5906?

maybe an M1 Garand!!! (not sure if its american or canadian, but when i hear or read M1 garand...i think about americans :p)

here's a few pics from the article. looks like a 1911.

In that bottom picture, the gun has no sights. And his finger is on the trigger in all of them. Cap had better work on gun safety.

The rumor is that The Punisher is now Captain America. Seems to fit.

Y'know, people complain that old-timey comic books never told any stories that seriously altered the status-quo. There is a reason for this. Altering the status-quo is confusing!

Also, one wonders just how useful a gun would be in the Marvel universe, since it seems to be crawling with beings that have inhuman durability, cybernetic enhancements, magical abilities and/or regenerative powers.

It's the Punisher in disguise.

Edit: whoa, jinx.

If it really were the Punisher, he'd have a WHOLE lot more guns though.

Dope

Also keep in mind, however, that in the comic book world, you can have .454 Casull bullets made from the silver of a melted cross, then blessed and baptized and filled with holy mercury.
It proceeds to instantly kill any non-good character. :)

Shot placement is key... ;)

I'm impressed with the new Cap, but I hope they don't try to make him into an "evil vigilante" & bring back the "good" Cap to stop him like DC did with Batman (remember Azrael?)

...and a good American would carry a big revolver, anyway... :D

Looks like the captain could use a five minute course in trigger discipline.

Remedial safety training for Cap.

I hope he's packing a 1911 - cuz that's what Captain Freaking America should be packing. I can think of no other auto that embodies America more than the 1911.

Except the M9 isn't an American gun, it's Italian. Captain America has to use an iconic American gun. If you limit that further to a pistol, there are only two I can think of: The Colt Peacemaker and the Colt 1911. I don't think Captain America would use a Peacemaker. Maybe a S&W 500. Maybe. Just for the badass factor.

The *real* Captain America rode a 1964 Harley Davidson Panhead and Dennis Hopper - who flipped off rednecks totin' shotguns - was his sidekick.

Biker...Harrrumph

... I can't believe Captain America doesn't have a wheelgun. No way.

There isn't anything more American than a Colt or a Smith and Wesson revolver (except perhaps a kick ass 1911). At the very least, give him a 686, as a backup, please!!

I've heard of six-pack abs, but is that a twelve-pak?

I wonder how many spare mags he's gonna carry...

...and does he need a permit to carry?

Will he leave California, Massatwoships and New York undefended due to the lack of right to carry?

Will he have a personal lawyer to defend against the bleeding-hearts myriad lawsuits that are sure to be filed?

Will he be imprisoned if anybody he shoots is an illegal alien, regardless of the number or severity of the laws broken (starting with entering illegally)?

These are the important questions I want to know about. You know, being a concerned American and all.:scrutiny:

Maybe its just me, but I don't think the Captain should have any handgun. Artistically, it throws off the classic look that made CA cool. The original CA would just have to hold up his shield threateningly, and that would be more terrifying to America's enemies than a little bullet.

Either that, or give him a proper longarm. I say he should always have a BAR strapped to his back.

Or give him a spear and red cape. He could scream "Madness? This-Is-AMERICA!!!" as he kicks Red Skull into a hole.

Excellent...
