CARRYING A CHAMBERED AUTO - OR NOT

Knocking on wood...

I've been carrying a Glock with one in the chamber for going on 5 years now. In those 5 years, I have NEVER accidently pulled the trigger or had anything else pull the trigger.

If you don't feel safe with a round chambered then don't carry that way, but don't make that decision because you've seen a few holes in the seats of old police cars. Regardless of what type or brand of handgun you carry, if you practice safe gun handling skills then you will never have to worry about a negligent discharge.

That being said, there are only a few occasions where my Glock ever comes out of it's holster:

1) Practice.
2) Cleaning.
3) When transferring to or from night stand safe in the morning or evening.

A firearm of any sort is only as safe as the person holding it.

To each his own. When I started having handguns in my house, automobile,& work which was a little over a year ago I was a little weary of having a round in the chamber and so I didnt keep one in there. What I did though is over a 2 month or so period is carry in every possible with many different guns. IWB holster, OWB holster, pocket carry with and without holster, holstered and slipped in the cracks between seats in my automobile,etc.... I also tried to pull the trigger when holstered and when reholstering(with any straps or shirtails). Once I figured out that unless I blatently pulled the trigger they werent going to fire i started keeping my chamber loaded.. If your one of those kind of people that has to play with you gun every 5 minutes then I dont recommend it. Practice un and reholstering and try to make the gun go off accidently. You should eventually feel comfortable enough with your abilities and training too keep one in the chamber. None of the guns I carry either have external safeties for what its worth.

I have comne to a conclusion that I probably should not carry a auto with a round in the chamber.

You're not alone! One evening I was sitting on my couch watching american idol and eating some snacky yummies when my holstered firearm which was sitting on the coffee table spun around and said "Hey bitch, get me a cold soda and some popcorn!" I declined and said "Mister gun, I don't appreciate the way you are speaking to me." Mister gun in response discharged a round which entered in to my couch just a few inches to the left of my knee.

Then I woke up -- twas just a dream!

A gun without one in the pipe is a very short bat!!! :what:

I only carry DAO autos in a good holster that covers the trigger properlly. When you need it, just draw, point and pull the trigger. Only one hand needed, quick to bring into action and no forgetting to take the safety off.

You just need to keep your finger off the tigger until you have something you are sure you want to shoot! ;)

I have been a revolver man for most of my life, but have owned a few semi-auto's over the years. And, all have been DA. Well, I did own a couple of .22's, but we're talking carry guns.

Anyway, I never felt the least bit uneasy about carrying my auto's with a round chambered because I understood that they basically operated like my revolvers. I guess it is what you are used to.

I would suggest that you either carry a DA revolver or familiarize yourself well enough with the pistol before carrying.
