cartridges that make you go "ouch!"

Worst I have ever fired: 600 Nitro Express.

Worst I have ever owned and fired: 450 Marlin in a non ported Guide Gun...

The ones that I don't like to shoot all that much:

45/70 and 30-06 out of NEF Handi-rifles.
To me they have poor ergonomics and felt recoil is much more than it should be.

450 Marlin Guide gun- a real thumper is ther ever was one.

Hungarian Mannlicher carbine in 8x56r.

All of the above are really nothing compared to shooting 3 1/2" turkey loads through a 12 guage though- I get instant headaches from shooting those.

A fellow I know let me shoot his .460 Weatherby.

Holy mother of pearl that thing kicked back hard, very hard and the muzzle climbed high. You would get only one shot at what ever African beast was charging you then the animal attack would be less painful than the recoil from a second shot.

I said:
a Remington model 760 carbine w/ an 18" barrel in 30-06.
Evenflo76 asked:
Are you talking about semi-auto or bolt action?
The Rem. 760 is a pump or more accurately a pump operated bolt action. In the carbine configuration w/ 18" barrel and lightened up some it is truly an uncomfortable gun. A joy to pack through thick SE Alaskan brush, very reassuring to have (5) 30-06 rds. available in the off chance of a bear charge, but between the incredible muzzle blast, the deafening roar and the mule kick recoil no fun at all to shoot. The gun is gone and not missed at all.

Shot a Weatherby Mark V Deluxe Magnum in .460 WM with Hornady 500 gr FMJ rounds. Shot that twice at the range after "tenderizing" my shoulder with a couple of boxes of 7mm Rem Mag and .30-'06.

Have shot the .404 Jeffrey, .416 Rigby. They sting but they're nothing like the .460 Weatherby. A friend owns one and had it at a range. Only time I'd ever handled one. So I tried it...

1 shot.

Handed it back to the guy with a pounder of a headache. Kissed my .300Winny and put her back in the case for the day. I'll never whine at the .300wm for kicking a bit much ANY more.

.303 Enfield Mil Surplus outta this:
303.jpg

8mm Turk out of a bolt action carbine.

00 Buck Magnum out of an Ithica Featherweight 12ga.

3" Magnum buck out of a Stephens 12ga single shot! (that one hurt with low-brass #7!!!)

I thought it was funny that someone brought up .50 BMG, the first time I shot my AR-50 I had to yank back the bolt to check the round to see if it fired. I think I was just so pumped up to shoot it that it didn't even feel like it fired.

Anyway, the .50's are less punishing then smaller calibers that I've shot due to the weight of the rifle and caliber.

.50 Beowulf(sp?) out of a 16" AR was the worst I've ever personally felt. I took 2 shots and handed it back to the gentleman who owned it.

Let me preface this by saying that the largest caliber I have shot regularly is the .30-06. Having only shot up to the .30-06, I had no idea that some of the other cartridges out there were so much more pwerful. I shot my hunting buddy's .300 Winchester magnum gun at the range about a year and a half ago when he was sighting it in for the season. It only took one shot and I was done. This guy actually wants to get a .300 Wetherby magnum next

(1) .45-70 with a 405 gr bullet at about 1800 fps in my Marlin 1895. This is not one to shoot from the bench.

(2) Not a cartridge, but still painful -- my Lyman .54 Great Plains rifle with anything over 90 gr of black powder. I'm convinced that cresent buttplates were designed by the Marquis de Sade.

I won't even dare...

Couple months ago I was at the range, sighting in my new .22 Remington 597, when the guy next to me whipped out his Marlin Guide Gun .45-70. You know the one - about the size of a Browning BL22, ported barrel, all business. He had made some hot handloads and was wanting to check them before going into the woods.

I think he shot about 20 rounds (and, yes, he was wearing a padded shooter's jacket). If it wasn't for the fact that I was there and wasn't done yet, I would have left. DOn't get me wrong - he has as much a right to shoot as me, and I am not angry with him. In fact, we had a nice conversation and he offered to let me craknk a couple off. But the blast of that gun 8' away from me made my fillings hurt, gave me a headache, and had my ears ringing (plugs & muffs) all evening.

I smiled, said "No thanks" and went back to my beer-can killer.

The worst part ~ he was shooting better groups at 100 yards than I was at 50!

My M44 loaded up with some hot greek ammo and it's steel butt-plate o'joy, is about as much hammering as my shoulder can tolerate.

I haven't fired any rifles that have given me much trouble since I've grown up (my uncle's .30-06 gave me some trouble at 7 or 8), but shooting some 3-inch 12ga slugs from a little Harrington & Richardson single shot rattled my teeth. I could read "H&R" from my shoulder in the mirror for a few weeks.

My worst was about the 500th round on the 2nd day of a tactical shotgun course with a Mossberg 500 12 ga. We were firing mostly full power buckshot and slug loads and went through about 1,000 rounds over the course of two days. Ouchie! Big, deep bruise on my shoulder. :(

The M44 is a pussycat compared to the Steyr M95 in 8x56R with a 205gr bullet. No comparison.

Eagle 1

I shoot a 24/47 with Turk surplus and a M44 with yellow tip ammo no problem. What tears up my shoulder is shooting 12ga 3 inch mags from a H&R single shot hammer back.
