I'm sick of trying to get my Lee powder measure to work! Can I please have some recommendations for a good case-actuated measure?

Thanks for your help,

Mike

My Hornady one that I have on my progressive works great. Once I set it, it's right on for however many rounds I run during that sitting. The last powder drop will weigh exactly the same as the first. I mainly load pistol on mine using Titegroup and Win 296.

vary consistent

Am I the only one that caught that?

Accidental play on words.

Maybe we could help with getting your measure going OP, whats the problem with it?

My RCBS Uniflow works great on my RCBS Pro2000 press, but I don't know how it would fit/work on something like a Lee turret. What press will you be using? Maybe some users of that press can chime in.

Both the Hornady L-N-L case activated system and the RCBS case activated system work well and are essentially the same. One is a license built of the other but I forget which way.

Both the Uniflow and Hornady L-N-L powder measures will work well with either. I prefer the Hornady case activated system but there is very little difference between the two.

The Redding powder measures can be modified to work with the case activated system. I have a Redding 10-X that I use on both my Hornady and RCBS progressive presses.

The Dillon powder measure set up for the 550 or 650 should work on any press with 7/8-14 dies. There is a tension rod on the Dillons that makes sure the powder measure is back to "zero" that will need some design attention to make sure it works on an alternate press.

Hope this helps.

I like the Lee system on my turret. I have an extra Hornady powder measure but it would be overkill on a turret. The Lee is my preference, no complaints. I like the older style with the block shaped hopper. The newer one is best on their 1000 and Loadmaster.

The basic Lee powder dispenser is too cheap and quirky for me. It leaked too much...too much plastic. The case activated Auto Disk works great for me.

I'm a fairly new owner of a classic cast turret kit with the pro auto powder measure. Do you have the "pro" version of the powder measure or just the plain auto measure. I can give you the tips that worked for me if you have the same one as me. I'm having no problems with consistent throws with the discs or the micrometer charge bar.

Powder measure

Wow! I didn't expect so much response so quickly. Thanks. I have one question for everybody: I'm using a Lyman turret press. Are there dies or adaptors or such that I would need for the various recommendations?

Thanks again,

Mike

Carbine85,

Yes, consistency is the problem. The drops are all over the scale and my bench is covered with powder. Please explain "Piggyback."

Thanks,

Mike

Oh btw, the Hornady has two different rotors. One for pistol and one for rifle. Definitely makes it more consistent. Just adjust it down like a die, lock it in, then set your throw with the plunger. Easy as that.

The Piggyback is a press made by RCBS that converts their standard press to progressive.
Have you tried a powder baffle? It might help with the charge weight issue. I don't know about the spilling problem. Are you pushing the case all the way up each stroke?

I am sure I'm pushing the case all the way up. I haven't thought of a powder baffle. Definitely worth a try.

Thanks,

Mike

all my presses are dillon....except the powder measures.

i have 5 hornady case activated measures.

why?.......they work!

I have a Hornady case activated powder drop with a RCBS Uniflow set up on a Redding T7 that works good for me.

Carbine85,

... The drops are all over the scale and my bench is covered with powder...

It sounds to me like you have static cling problems. I would wipe everything in the powder path with graphite and a used dryer sheet. Next i would put a small amount of powder in the measure and add a generous squirt of graphite into it and work it thru the measure.

The Lee disk type measure is capable of very consistent throws. They look and feel like junk but actually work quite well.

HHmmm
I have the old style Lee disk with the rectangle shapped hopper, works ok, the Lee Pro Disk (much better) and the Lee Perfect Powder measure.

Which Lee measure? And what powder are you having problems with? All of them?

Sure you could replace you measure but you should be able to beat the one you have into submission.:)

I noticed some of the old rectangle hoppers did not fit well and needed to be sanded. My Pro disk works well with most powders except Unique. + or - .2 with that powder, meters Promo fine.

What powder? What caliber? Are you using the disc or the micrometer charge bar?

Large flake powders and small charges do not play well with the charge bar.

I'd suggest just taking the easy route and getting the Hornady powder measure. You won't regret the purchase as I think it is the best powder measure on the market.

The two rotors and multiple interchangeable inserts just puts it head and shoulders above most...if you reload for more than one caliber. It is solid and simple, what more can you ask for?

I'd give the de-static procedure a shot first too.

My two Pro Auto Disks worked marvelously on my Lee Classic Turret. When I got a LnL AP I moved them over to the LnL AP and they work just as consistently there. On the LCT it got jiggled, bounced, whirled, etc on its way around the turret. On the LnL it doesn't move at all. No difference in the amount it drops or the consistency. I do only use HP 38.
Are you using yours on a Lee expander/flare/powder drop die? Not sure they would work with any other brand of die.

Have we learned which measure, powder, etc OP is using? I bet someone could help. Something's not right if it's spilling powder everywhere.
