seems as though the powders for cast loads in pistol are as good as the ever were. Bullseye, unique, and 2400 seem to be the trio that gets it done and really always have. I'm currently trying to find the ones in rifle cast. 2400 seems really good here as well and if it was plentiful I might just stop there. 4227 has worked well for me and I'm intending on testing 4198. Am I missing the one for cast in rifle or are those the big players.

What cartridges?
My Whelen shoots coated cast at full velocity with full charges of standard powders.
I beat my head against the wall with 300 WM.
3040 Krag likes IMR4227 just like 308 does.
30-30 likes IMR3031.
I'm playing the field with 308 loads for plinking but the 6.5x55 likes 2400 and I will be doing the same thing with the arisaka eventually. Range rounds out to 300 max.

Add AA#2 and AA#5 to the list. #5 also works great in 40 S&W cast or plated. #2 is a great replacement for bullseye.

Lots of good powder out there for cast loads in rifles. 2400 is one of my favorites as well, but powders like Reloader #7, IMR or H-4198. IMR or H-4895, H-335 and IMR-3031 are all excellent powders for cast rifle loads. Except for 3031 I used all the above with excellent success.

I like 2400 for a longer powder burn with cast and light jacketed loads. It works well for 123 grain .311 in my Mosin and Argentine Mauser. I was getting some keyholes with faster powders. Heaver bullets i use unique and the dot powders. I been doing some of my own development with Blue dot. It's been well so far. I work up the loads a little at a time.

Have you read about SEAFIRE's testing of blue dot with jacketed bullets?
I've found the 50% case full with 150 in plated or 165 coated is good in my 30-30. I use the same charge in my Krag for 1650 fps. It's minute of pop can which is all my eyes can shoot with irons.
In 7x57 it was more accurate than full power loads.

I cant find any blue dot to save my life. I will get and test it across many calibers once I get my mitts on some.

I found a pound of h335 last summer. I am planning on testing it with cast in 30-30. It's not a powder that gets a lot of airtime in 30-30, but data is there even for cast and the occasional report I've seen is favorable.

Part of the ideal load for me is using less... 23 grains of 4227 is a lot less than 40 or more grains of a slower powder. We're not talking powder puff loads but a good middle ground. It makes shooting more available to me.

Low velocity, and mid range, Unique. Medium to 3/4, 2400, full load, 3031, 4198. These are y choices for 30-30, 308 and 30-06. (and Krag, Arisaka)

I'm looking as using a lee 311-93-1r and bullseye for a very light load. Hoping I can get good trajectory out to 50 yards but I'd settle for 30. I've done some research on it but baby done any experimenting yet. Other than casting some.

Accurate No.9 and IMR 3031 are two that should be on your list but I always recommend gas checks with 3031.

16.0-20.0 grain and use a high brisance primer. Don’t worry so much about position. You’re using a lever gun, the powder is gonna get shifted, bounced, and tossed plenty enough.
Unfortunately I ran out of that bullet and I got a mold to prevent that from happening again. I'm starting over basically. That was also a gas checked 150.

I’ve used 2400 for 30-30 with 135 grain flat point bullets from Acme. It works and shoots but I had to drop the charge down to about 13 grains or the bullets would strip the rifling and cause heavy leading even with the Hi-Tech coating. The bullets are sized 0.3095” and I was using a Marlin micro groove barrel, which I hear has shallower grooves than other rifling patterns.

I’m actually looking for another powder as these loads are rather smokey and dirty. I haven’t shot them past 25 yards so I know how well they’ll group, but they’ll at least stay in the same target now.
