Experienced handgunner here but I am considering getting my CC permit soon in Louisiana. I do not plan to carry every day but mostly when I am backpacking. I am just curious as to what the class entails. Will I be required to use a compact weapon, as I only have a 4 inch 357 which is my trail gun. Is the shooting basic Weaver target style shooting or a combat style range? Thanks any tips would be appreciated!

You need to find who you wish to take a class with . Many times they have handguns that can be used for the class, loaners or rentals. Pay for the ammo. Might also check on class prices as around here some class's are at indoor ranges in town with more over head and higher prices while some are at homes in the country with just as qualified instructors maybe a better class with less people at reduced cost . Thats in NC . I see fees from 55 to 125 dollars

Do a Google for LA firearms laws. It'll spell out clearly what's required. Fortunately, we don't have to take any kind of course in my state.

+1 with hentown. In AZ, when we had to get a CCW to carry concealed, you could bring a 6" barrel .22 to qualify for even if you were going to carry a j-frame .357 mag. There was no time limit for the few shots you had to shoot at a target the size of a broiler pan. You had to be near death or blind to not qualify.

It varies state to state. Good luck

The main thing to concern yourself with is finding a competent instructor. If your instructor is good your training will be good and the reverse is true as well. I believe your 4" 357 Magnum will be just fine. I doubt they will have you fire from concealment when on the range. Most classes I have been to required open carry on the firing line. The instructor will normally give instructions as to which shooting styles to use while on the range. Good luck and stay safe.

Well, every instructor teaches the class differently, at least what I've experienced in KY and VA. I suspect he wanted more than just state law for inside information.
