In some states it is illegal to carry on a city bus.

I do not believe in MN it is generally illegal to CC in a commercial vehicle. Note the words "generally" and "illegal".

Many (if not most) companies have rules prohibiting CC by employees in their company owned vehicles.

You could go to the appropriate state statutes and check them out for yourself.

If by Commercial vehicle you mean your self owned truck or company vehicle thats fine.
Now if its a company situation your employer may have rules against.
As pointed out some states like GA prohibit carry on buses, trains, etc. and of course the FEDS,carriers like Greyhound,Amtrac all comm. airlines, all off limits..
Like the man said so many variables.

Try asking over at TCCarry.com or Mnguntalk.com. locals who have the knowledge On TCC Kimberman is the man who actually wrote the law as it was passed, and he tends to know whats what with regard to the MPPA

What Vehicles

IF you are asking about 18 wheelers that haul freight that are on the highways the answer is yes if you have a permit that is valid in the state you are driving in or you are following the laws of that state like Florida and have the loaded gun in the Glove Box. If you own your own rig you are OK. Most companies have regulations that do not allow their drivers to carry in their vehicles. They can not put you in jail for breaking a company regulations but they can fire you. There is no Federal Law that says you can not carry in your Commercial Truck. You must follow the same laws as are in effect in the state you are driving. Hope this helps.

Thanks,Chuck Dye for that link. And Gary, who posted while I was typing.(slowly)
CDL's are issued on a state, not Federal basis.I taught the course when it first became law in 1992.(Omnibus Act,1992)
State law will apply in every case.In FL no problem with State buses, trains, private carriers.Tri-Rail in South Fl has no gun signs which have no force of law unless trespass becomes an issue.
As was said, individual companies will have their own employee rules.

thank you very much folks. i deliver five gallon water for coolers locally for a company. we lease our trucks from penske and a mechanic there told me it was a federal law that you could not carry in a commercial vehicle, sounds like he was wrong.

chuck i just went to your link and now i am confused again there are peope who are positive it is illegal and people who are positive it is not illegal

Kanderson, I was told the same thing 10 yrs ago when first getting my CDL. The driving instructor told us that it's illegal to have a firearm in ANY commercial vehicle. To this day I still drive commercially, and I've been unable to locate in ANY writing where it says it's illegal to carry in a commercial vehicle.

However, I've read testimony from people who've claimed to ask State Troopers (I think it was on this board about a year back or so), and even the Troopers say it's ok, as long as you have a license to carry. It's just a shame that so many CDL instructors are misinforming their students.

kanderson586,please listen to Gary Slider,if no one else.He is correct.

also keep in mind that other states have magazine capacity limits like CA is 10, TX doesn't matter. Know your route and research the do's and don't for each state.

There is nothing in the federal motor carrier safety regs which prohibit carrying a firearm in the vehicle. However, there may states in which you travel which restrict firearms in vehicles, regardless whether commercial or private, so you need to check with the states in which you will be traveling.
I was one of the first Troops in IL certified in MCS law over 25 yrs ago. I later taught MCS law in our academy.

Before the State Laws, you want to know the companies stand on firearms.
I worked for a Communication Co. There stand was --you bring a firearm onto, into company property and you are 'fired'.

He can't post the reg because there is nothing in FMCSA which prohibits carrying a firearm in a commercial vehicle.
What some of these "experts" will post thinking it applies refers to haz mat shipments. Just wait and see if one of these "experts" pop up with that. Just shows they have no knowledge of what they're reading. Even the hazmat reg doesn't prohibit carrying a firearm by the operator.

I been driving a truck for 12 years...legally armed everyday. But I don't go to IL or NY...most states have "peaceable journey" laws...otherwise carrying in a commercial vehicle is just like carrying in your car...and I don't give a rats behind what my employer thinks about it...if he don't like it...truck driving jobs ain't hard to find....GOOD DRIVERS ARE. FWIW....my employer knows about my CCW. EDIT: JUST DON'T TRY TO CROSS ANY INTERNATIONAL BORDERS WITH IT, YOU WILL BE LOCKED UP FOR A LOOOOONG TIME

Unhappy
pending state by state laws maybe,

but under fed reg, not allowed.

Here you go, sir:

http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/

Please search "All Regulations" for any term regarding weapons or firearms. You will find there are NONE.

Sorry, you are mistaken, misinformed or whatever.

I can tell you this

I drive a commercial vehicle (Taxi) in Michigan. I have interacted with the police several times while carrying and have NEVER been told I was breaking the law, and one of the LEOs is a HUGE anti. He would have arrested me if he had the chance. That is just my experience take it for what you want.

ok not even trying to do any reserch, i will concede to you.

i just never did try looking as all of the companys i have worked for just say have a "weapon" get fired.

even the company i work for now, they look at my 4D mag light with crossed eyes.

like so many of us out there we were going on what others have been saying for years and if any doubt better to play the safe side.

i was talking to a nevda city cop last week and he did say in nevada it is leagle in a commercial truck.
