I've tossed around the idea of making a pistol-shaped object using bright flourescent I'm-not-a-gun colors to serve as a sort of CCW trainer. It would be the same bulk, rough shape and weight of my carry piece. Pop it in a holster, walk around and get used to the way a CCW feels. Perhaps find my preferred carry method. The reason I am not carrying a real weapon is the fact that I will not be able to legally CCW until next year. (Assuming I'm not still in CA...)

Are there any legal issues I should be concerned about? It it a worthwhile idea?

Thanks!

Only a worthwhile idea if you can make it cheaper than the currently commercially available training guns. And from what I understand, making them cheaper not be very difficult.

Carrying can get you in serious trouble. Anything that looks like a gun will be taken as a threat to an LEO if he or she sees it. Color is meaningless.

An LEO would probably recognize a proper training sidearm - solid chunk of plastic in a nice light/medium blue (not steel blue).

Doesn't even look like a toy. But - it's the right size/weight/shape.

Colors don't matter - any BG could paint a gun red if he thought it would give a victim or a cop a moments pause - all he might need. And in the dark or low light we're all color-blind.
