After much research here on THR and elsewhere I just bought 3 each Centerpoint 2-7x32 and 4-16x40 rifle scopes plus 1 each Simmons 6.5-20x50. The latter is for a varmint rifle.

My eyes aren't the best anymore and I never could shoot worth a darn anyway. All these need to do is...

1. Be reasonably sharp/clear
2. Stay centered once adjusted
3. Outlast me... 10-20 years

I'm not interested in pricey or even medium-priced scopes. I want the "best bang for buck compromise". I want "budget" but not "cheap". These just need to work for this old coot and I'm not looking for "minute of gnat's byootox" accuracy.

Their purposes vary... plinking, hunting (maybe), and target shooting. Calibers vary from .17 HMR and .22LR through .308 Win and up to .375 H&H Mag. Later a .458 SOCOM may follow.

Personally, I think I made a good decision... though I know opinions will differ.

I'm listening (reading).

nothing wrong with a simmons white tail classic or 44 mag they are affordable.i know nothing of the center points but for a rimfire i would probally buy one.i also think the bushnell banners are not bad for the money. not everybody has 400.00 for a scope.

I appreciate the replies so far, folks.

BTW, before I saw all the positive remarks about Centerpoints I had decided to buy Vortex Diamondback scopes. I just couldn't pass up what appears to be one of the best deals going right now.

UPDATE: I just retrieved the Simmons 6.5-20x50 Whitetail Classic from my mailbox. I can't speak of anything EXCEPT optical performance just yet. But, it appears to be VERY nice in that one regard.

I have the 4-16X40 on my Marlin XT22, no complaints at all. Been a good scope so far, if it dies Walmart will give me a new one...

I think you'll be happy with yours.

I had one of those Center Point 4-16's and used it on a centerfire for a while, then on a .22. I ended up selling it with the .22 when I sold it, but it was a pretty good scope. The glass was kind of lousy past 12x, and not great under that, but it was still decent. To my surprise for such a cheap scope, it seemed to track very well and return to zero repeatably. This really surprised me. It also seemed durable while I had it. I probably had it 10 months or so. I found it to be a really good scope for the $70 I paid for it. I think you will like yours, and for a .22 I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

As for the Simmons WTC, I have no experience other than looking through a friends, so I can't comment on it too much.

I appreciate the replies so far, folks. Please keep them coming.

I'm going to start a new thread about something I noticed with one of the Centerpoint Adventure Class 4-16x40 scopes that arrived today.

I bought one (3-9-32) to use on 10-22. Held up really well. Bought a 4x12x40 and put it on a AR-15 varmint gun i built. held up pretty well after about 500 rounds. Short of it, not bad for the money. It's not a ZEISS but you're not giving up your first born either.

Everyone will have their own experience with anything on the market. I myself would not buy anything from Centerpoint again due to issues with several items. Bought one of the 4-16 mildot scopes for around $70.00, first one was close to 8 feet off target at 100yds and could only bring it to within 12" of center. Replacement was same problem, third was same problem. Last item I purchased from Centerpoint was the Boresight laser. After setting scopes and at range was a good 10 inch out I set out testing the boresighter. Setup a perfect tube, inserted correct size adapter, set the tube on jaws of vice that would allow the tube to be rotated the laser was painting a big circle on wall. Took me about 30 min of work to readjust the laser to something close to center. I too have more issues with eyes not being that good anymore, I purchased a used NcStar scope to go on my AR. Optics were absolutely perfect clear as I could ever ask for. The illumination adjustment was touchy so I called NcStar and asked about having it serviced then I was told to send it back because it had a life time warranty. Even after I told the tech it was bought second hand he said it made no difference. I sent it back and within 8days I had a brand new more modern scope in hand. Again the optics are great.

Simmons scopes are nice. Very good for the money. I have a few of their scopes and just mounted another one on a sporterized K98. She goes to the range on Saturday.
