Ah, non-import-marked M44.

Lots of WWII surplus bolt actions were imported in the 1950's and 1960's, particularly Carcanos and S.M.L.E.s. Since imported before 1968, there are no import marks.

sure thing. It honestly was my mistake at first though, you are correct. I was under the impression that the norincos like that, and mine were mostly imported just before the AWB. (china capitalizing on the grandfather clause) and that such a modification would be okay. It has come to my attention that this is not so.
thanks for the input.

rust collector:

You can take the bayonet off the Chinese. It was never subject to the "original military configuration" requirement of C&R.

As far as the stock, I can't say for sure. I've heard differing opinions on the issue. My take is that if the stock is functionally the same, it is fine to replace it. However, you probably need to replace compliance parts to put it in a folding stock.

You guys are making it real clear why I don't, and never will, own an SKS. Any semi-auto rifle that requires checking with a lawyer every time you want to add or remove a harmless accessory ain't worth having at any price.
