My wonderful wife gave me a Master F1 Shooting Chrony for Christmas, so I've been out having fun with .22s this afternoon. (Just to show she comes from good stock, her mother gave me a Frankford Arnsenal electronic digital caliper.)

Mother Nature cooperated by having it be overcast at first, then sunny, then overcast again, for a variety of test conditions. The main lesson I learned this afternoon was how much difference there is between a 4" handgun barrel and a 22" rifle barrel, especially in the hotter .22 loads.

I'm looking forward to trying out my .38 and .45 handloads. Maybe I'll get some surprises!

Any suggestions for other fun activities with a new chronograph?

Okie ........ good news! You will find it an invaluable adjunct .... the more so if you reload.

Mine has served well for quite a while now - main prob is remembering to take it with me to range ..... and/or being too lazy to set it up!!

I find it useful to wind some electrical tape around the metal rods that support the diffusers ..... one lot about 1/3 from top, the other about 1/3 from bottom. This gives a useful visual reference when shooting with scopes etc .... eye up barrel line first to make sure you are shooting thru clear zone ... then relate that to scope view .... and remember how that in turn relates to tape positions .... then it is not too difficult to keep tape in sight even if outa focus. I use red and blue to make them well visible.

It is interesting to chrono pellet guns too ... and work out the energy

One heckuva fine gift from a gal with a heckuva fine bloodline. :)

My uncle gave me a relief carved loading block. It holds 5 50 cal patched round balls and has an eagle on it. Made it all himself in his spare time. :D All I got him was a 300 pound gun cabinet.

I bought a refurbished Shooting Chrony for $49. They mention them on the website. I leave it in the truck all the time. It has been in there for 3-4 years and no problems so far from the vibration, heat, or cold. I set it up on my truck tailgate or on my truck tool box. Nothing to it.
I feel this simple little chrono suits my needs perfectly. It is cheap enough and compact enough to just leave in the truck all the time. It is simple to set up and use. And, if I end up shooting it someday, I am not out a whole lot.
I may, at some point in the future, but a more elaborate chronograph, but this cheapie will still augment it well.

I find the chrono to be a very interesting tool. I have played around with very light loads. Pellet guns, paintball guns etc. I had a ball fairly recently testing various loads in various barrel lengths. Of course I didn't discover anything ground breaking, but it was fun to see it for myself.
How many of those Chinese, 1000 fps pellet rifles actually shoot 1000 fps ? You can now find out for yourself.
