Civilians to guard police stations
Police stations currently being targeted by dissident republican terrorists will soon be guarded by unarmed civilians.
It is part of a drive to tackle the shortage of experienced police officers, releasing them from guard duties and putting them on the streets to tackle so-called ordinary crime.
This proposal will affect six or more police stations in the north and west, including Strand Road and Waterside in Londonderry, Coleraine, Limavady, Strabane and North Region`s largest base at Maydown just outside Londonderry.
In the coming months, the number of armed police officers on guard will be reduced and civilian workers without guns will be on duty, although they will have armed police officers nearby.
One senior Policing Board member says it is an essential move.
Policing Board Vice-Chairman Denis Bradley said: "We need to get as many police people out on the streets onto the roads to respond to whatever crime is happening so that people feel more confident more secure.
"Now that means a police man is guarding a police station who doesn`t need to guard it that means that person will be civilanised and a police man will be put on the streets."
Unionists, though, are outraged that unarmed civilians will soon be guarding police stations which are under deadly threat from terrorists.
DUP MP Gregory Campbell said: "The North West in the view of many people has been the hotbed of so-called dissident activity. So if there is anywhere where there is more vulnerability in terms of security bases it is the North West.
"We`ve seen five six maybe even seven either army camps or police stations that have been under attack by these republican elements.
"Now if those bases some of them are going to be made in the front line by personnel some of whom will be unarmed and civilians then that is a very deep serious security consideration."
