Clearance prices on some savage rifles at Walmart

I bought one in 30-06 today for $199. Can't go wrong at that price.

It seems to vary by store. Locations that are over stocked on certain models can have drastically reduced prices. Problem is, many stores don’t have them marked well, and trying to find someone that is willing to help can be problematic

Our local store for some reason kept getting a certain model of Spyderco knives. They got to having maybe 75-100 in stock, so they marked them down from $50 to about $13. I bought a dozen to give to my customers. When they were gone I tried to get some at other stores. They’d never seen the over supply

My local store appears to have plenty of various calibers at $198. Heck of a price/value but if I'm being honest with myself I don't need one . . . . unless maybe they have one in 6.5 Creedmoor in stock . . . .
I can't seem to find the Brickseek link for that model to check :).

I picked one up in 6.5 CM when ours had them clearanced out for $196...and a .243, and a .22-250.
Didn't NEED any of them.

I got an Axis II (non-XP) in 6.5 Creedmoor matte stainless steel with the older stock for $225. No scope since it was not an XP. I planned a Boyds stock (I like the Prairie Hunter since I live on the prairie!). I had to haggle with the manager since it was not technically per her on sale. I like it and I had a new Nikon 3X9 BDC and Warne rings to mount. The thing is a laser even with the plastic stock.

How does one remove the rubber butt, I might put (non-expanding) foam in there until I get a Boyds, if I could. I see a tab but not sure how it disengages?

It's been a while, I thought there was a screw that held it in. Had a .223 Axis. Once I broke mine it was obvious. I played with a piece of pipe and lead shot in the butt stock until I got mine to balance at the magazine. Then centered the pipe, foamed the stock and clamped the recoil pad back in place till cured. MUCH BETTER offhand rifle once balanced. Sold it after I bought my Howa mini action.

The aft sling stud must be removed and then gently push the locking tab in the top of the stock. My thought was to pour reinforced epoxy into the upper grip area and then a PVC tube (for weight insertion). Then inject non-expanding foam. But----

I ordered a Boyds Prairie Hunter (I do live on the Prairie !) in Coyote and some other bits and pieces to upgrade and customize the rifle. I like to hotrod low end rifles/guns that shoot as good or better than high end stuff. Since I already had the nice Nikon scope and steel Warn vertical split rings and a good Weaver base I was able to get it sighted in as is. I like to modify things, whatever it is, and when I purchase an expensive rifle I feel badly when I start the modifying. The Axis II has a decent trigger, the barrel and receiver and bolt look to be substantial and the rifle is accurate out of the box and I will not feel badly at all about ditching the plastic stock. I tried to run a listing on this site, wanted to purchase a take off newer Axis stock to experiment with but the listing went away, I give up and ordered the Boyds. Only bad thing there is the long wait I am sure. I was thinking to have the rifle receiver laser engraved on the "flat" on the left side. Not sure who could do that for me. But for the total investment of around $500 I should soon have a very accurate rifle that can be walked along open wooded bottoms or hunted from a stand along a cutover fields.

I was fortunate enough today to find and buy a new Savage Axis rifle and .30/06 at my local Walmart for $150 plus tax out the door. I did not really need it, but it was too good of a price to pass up.
A buddy picked one of those up and made a load for it using surplus RG4895. Takes it silhouette shooting and it does pretty well.

Repaired my 100 yard range today and was able to shoot the new Creedmoor. I have a 3X9 Nikon BDC scope mounted up with Warne steel vertical split rings on a full length Weaver base. It was not far off but did need some clicks, mostly up and a little to the left. Got it printing good with a few rounds at 50 yards and moved out to 100 yards. Fired three shots from my Stinger bench rest set on not the steadiest patio table. I was unable to discern more than one impact on my freshly painted steel plate with my spotting scope. Looks like the divots were all touching. I think it is sub .25 MOD (minute of deer).

I would have liked the newer style plastic stock and I would not have ordered the Boyds, but, whatever.

I would rather pay more to a local store then save some $. This is just me. I hate Wal Mart. Worked for them a long time ago. They do not care about employees. And now they want sell handgun ammo. Hard pass. Happy you got what you wanted. Hope it's a good one.

Same. I’ll spend my gun money somewhere that wants it.

The local guns stores for me are Cabalas and Gander OD and a few others I do business with. So, you would pay double price at a local gun store? The rifles are not built by Walmart or the local LGS. They are simply resellers. Of course it is good one or I would not have bought it. Savage does not select the bad ones and send them all to Walmart and select all the good ones and send them to a LGS. If I am going to take it up the rear from a LGS and pay double they could at least be congenial and they rarely are thus my loyalty is does not run very deep. I will pay a little more if they are nice and give me something Walmart or Gander or Cabalas cannot, as in treat me like a valued customer. Which they do not.

If you do not want a decent deal on a Savage Axis from Walmart, go pay more somewhere else, your are right, the best deal is not always the cheapest and lowest price deal. A transaction that leaves both parties fulfilled is always a good course.

Do you not have anyone (LGS) who does transfers?

I stopped by our Walmart tonight, they had some nice prices on a few Savages and Remingtons, a couple were sub-$200. If they had a 6.5 Creedmoor I would have ended up with a rifle and one very pissed off wife, but alas they did not. I was tempted by a .243 but not enough to end up in the doghouse over it.
