Depends on how many threats are out there... and how fast they need to be engaged.
1-2 threats... need to be engaged FAST... coach gun.
5-6 threats... machine gun.

who would you rather have at your side if things turned bad: a guy who 'knows' his coach gun or a guy who 'knows' his pump?
I'll take that guy who was reloading and shooting the coach gun about every three seconds.

Here's something to chew on. Many of you say it doesn't matter what you have as long as you know your gun. Well can you answer me this, who would you rather have at your side if things turned bad: a guy who 'knows' his coach gun or a guy who 'knows' his pump?

I'm not going to war, I'm defending my safe room and I don't need nor will there be, anyone's help. Oh, 911 will likely have been called before I have to open up and they get here pretty quick, but basically, I'll be doing my own shooting.

If I lose 35 years and join the army, I'll get back to ya.

Yes, it is viable. No, it is not the best choice in shotguns for the task.

I think you missed the point of the question.

A guy who knows his M4 wearing a vest full of loaded 30-round magazines and using some sort of night vision equipment. :)

Good point. I jusy know I've seen some great shooters who can get their doubles (and singles) reloaded VERY quickly. I'm sure not one of them, so I go with the ex-Police 870 Wingmaster.

Pumps are for people that can't hit.

And if you need more than two rounds, you picked the wrong confrontation.

Shoot a 12 gauge at a significant target, 3/4" plywood is good, from about 7 paces. You get a hole you can stick your fist through without messing up your manicure.

Have you guys that use coach guns ever tried the Aguila mini shotgun shells? I was thinking of going to a coach gun for this very reason less muzzle blast in a house.

I'm convinced that any gun you can shoot well and want to own beats something you can't shoot and don't own any day.

just buy any pump action shotgun, cut the barrel to 19 inches, make sure with the stock cut off itll be 26 inches or longer and if so then cut that thing off, and whoalah, badass home defense gun. for home defense ranges, i think itd be very effective, plus theres the intimidation factor; it might get the intruder to piss themselves and run away before anything even "goes down." hell you can do that with any shotgun i guess. ive done it to a pump and a single barrel single shot. they're pretty useless for anything other than home defense and range fun though, you'll also have to find a replacement bolt and a roll of duct tape though ;)

nothing wrong with a coach gun. Really cant get anymore idiot proof unless you go with a single shot shotgun.
drunk people managed to kill alot of people with these "obsolete" weapons back in the day.

The poll sounds as if it presume that you already have the SxS and want validation that it's viable, but then youe post makes it sound like you don't have anything yet. I'm not sure which of those two questions I'm answering.

I wouldn't cry if a hammer SxS was all I had, but I'd probably choose something different if I had the choice.

Training with the one ya got is key, but if you have nothing yet you may not want to handicap yourself (relatively speaking) by getting a SxS instead of one of the many other options.

If you're going to cut the stock off, you're going to need a high cap pump cause you ain't gonna be able to hit squat with it. I ain't into shotguns with no stock. I want it to fit and point natural, just like in the field, no matter if it's a pump, a SxS, or an auto.

Oh, I don't shoot handguns sideways, either. Quit watching movies.

I don't hold firearms sideways either, I'm not "ghetto" or any of that stupid crap, I also rarely watch television let alone movies and I'm sorry you're so upset that you can't hit anything with pistol grip shotguns, I sure as hell can, and quite accurately for home defense ranges too. :neener:

The Coach would not be the only loaded weapon. There is a six shooter in each nightstand. The Coach would be under the bed with a 5 shell cuff on it. I noticed the reload procedure that Clint Smith teaches and I think that it makes the double bbl a viable option.

I think a Coach gun is a good 1st choice for home defense.

I have one and I bought one for my daughter. Both are 12
gauge. Hers is loaded with Aguila MiniShell buckshot load.
Very low recoil, but still very effective. I use regular 00 buck.

Reasons for a Coach gun --

1. You can keep this arm in a loaded condition safely. All
you have to do to get in a ready condition is pull the hammers back.

2. Short and handy. Open choke.

3. Two immediate quick shots. Professional Hunters use side by side
double rifles to stop charges of dangerous game. I think this philosophy
applies well for defense as well.

4. They are very cool.

5. They are fun. I've shot both clays and quail with mine.

The case has been made that you should pick the most effective gun (when it comes to pistol grip only vs full stock) regardless of whether you're "adequate" with a sub-standard version...makes sense to me. There is almost no way in heck you'll actually be BETTER with the bubba'd stock.

I just don't get why you did that to your guns, but whatever floats your boat.

Because it beats the hell out of paying a crap load of dough and filling out paper work for the exact same thing with an original pistol grip and 3-4 inch shorter barrel. If you feel more comfortable with a stock more power to ya bud but I don't need one, I like compact firearms, so you can see the appeal to me of getting an inexpensive but functioning shotgun and making it as short as legally possible before paperwork. I'm great with these things, I can hit where I want with 'em and they're effective for home defense ranges. If you don't like the idea, well I'm sorry, but I like 'em, enough said.

This is a good point. I am aware that the two situations (African bush hunting vs. Home Defense) are not identical, but there is something to be said about a double bbl rifle being used against charging rhinos and elephants. Keep in mind I have a Ruger on both my side and my wife's side. If I go through twelve rounds of .38 Special +P (unlikely), I would like to think I could shut the party down with 7 rounds (2 bbl + 5 round cuff) of 00 buckshot. I will practice reloading a lot.

Related question:

Are there any SxS shotguns out these days with external hammers? I can't seem to find any besides the Century Arms one.

I have a stoeger sxs but have not shot it yet. I do plan on it soon. Its a pretty cool shotgun and should be great for home defense. I use a ithica model 37 20" barrel right now but plan on trying the other one. Love the old steel frame ithica that was made in 1941 as you just hold the trigger and pump.
