I haven't dealt as much with Colt's as Smith & Wessons, but I've had a 4 inch blue Python with pachmyar grips offered to me.

Gun is mechanically near new, with some holster wear, I'd rate the finish about 90%.

He's asking $500.00, which seems good?

Walk slowly up to the seller, hand him the cash, gently take the gun and then RUN to the nearest exit with a big spit eatin grin.
Good luck.

Unlike what Jeff said you should run to the seller with the cash. Then follow Jeff's advice. Two years ago I bought a used 4" Python in about 80% to 90% condition for $800 OTD. From the wear on the blue and the grips it appeared to be a cop gun but there is no absolute proof of it being a cop gun.

Pay the money and enjoy the Python. That asking price is low.

Thanks folks, looks like it's a go. I needed to thin out one to make sure I had the money for the Python, and I have a firm "I'll take it" from someone, so I called the Python owner and he's going to hold it for me!!!

I turned down a blued python for $700 or so in early 09... I had the cash but was looking for an AR or some other deal. I regret it now.

If you are looking for a shooter or a field fun it is a good buy, check under the rubbers to see if there is blue loss or pitting and check the mechanics of the gun, Colts can be expensive to fix and it takes a special person, but if it is just some honest holster wear it's a deal. A nice set of original grips are going to set you back a few bucks! Good luck.

Well I just got home with it!!!

It has some holster wear in the typical places, but it locks up like a bank vault!!!

It's dirty as heck and has some lead in the bore that needs cleaned out, but no rust anywhere on the gun, even under the rubber grips.

According to a couple of online charts, the serial number puts it as being made in 1970, so would the rubber grips be original? They are Pachmayr "Grippers" with the Pachmayr logo on the medallion, not the Colt logo.

CONGRATS! Hope I am as fortunate in the near future as a Python is next on my list. ENJOY !!!

Congrats on a great gun! As for the grips they are not original to the gun, it most likely came with the wood target stocks, check GB for the stocks if that is what you want anyway you can get a idea of what they look like they go from around $150-$200 for a nice set!

I may look for some decent wood grips of the original size, not sure I'll spring for real "Colt" factory ones....been looking and they are HIGH!!!!

Well here she is, probably won't win any beauty contests, holster wear around the muzzle and in other "high" spots, but I found on the Colt forum a list of tests to give a Python to check timing and stuff, and she passes them all.

If Colt would re-blue it, think it would be worth it?

Python Grips

here are the ones I use I find them nicer to shoot with and they are original
in that they were used the last few years on Python Elites.
They are made by Altamont grip co. and they also make grips for S&W Performence Center guns. They can be bought several places online and right from Altamont for that matter. I have bought many sets from Tina on Gunbroker she goes by MagLady
She seems to have the best prices.

The holster wear is not a big problem. If that's the original blue do NOT get it reblued! Don't even think about it. Nobody can give you a blue as good as the originals anymore. It took too long and involved too many toxins. Just get a nice hardwood stock for it or ivory.

The Python is a fine gun and the frame size more than adequate to shoot full magnum rounds without frame warping or severe forcing cone erosion. The only problems the Pythons are known to have are: 1) grips that seem better suited for a gorilla than a human's, and 2) the small pawl size, which results in excessive wear and timing problems.

The first can be solved by Pachmayrs/custom grips; the second by having the pawl hard chromed. Some die hard shooters even hard chrome the rarchets as well. With both parts having Rockwell ratings of 71-78, they will virtually stop wearing, period.

Let us know how the gun fares in the asphalt bounce test, as well as the mud and sand tests!

You got a great deal. Always wanted a Python barrel for my Ruger Security-Six!
