considering a 17hmr - savage or marlin

im looking at a blued HB with wood stock, the savage with accutrigger runs $231 and the marlin runs $220. if i go for the marlin ill probably swap out the trigger for a riflebasics and thats another $80 but i kinda like the stock of the marlin a little better. im having a tough time deciding. any opinions to sway my decision?

The Savage 17 I had wouldn't shoot under an inch with 3 shots at 100 yards no matter what ammo I used, if it was clean or dirty and I even tried 3 different scopes. Granted I had a POS Savage and it is not a representation of all Savage rifles, but I have not seen a bad Marlin barrel. I hated the Savage stock too, too much drop at the comb for me.

i have a savage 93R17BV with a wood stock, and the last time i shot a 5 shot group at my 100 yard range, it went into .377", and at 50 yards, it will put all 5 shots in one slightly enlarged hole, i say go savage.

The Savage. The accutrigger is really nice, they are known for their accuracy, and they are great deals. The stocks on the other hand.....at least they fixed that on the centerfire rifles with the accustock. Not that big of a deal IMO.

I have the savage arms mako 17hmr with the adjustable accutrigger. I LOVE the trigger. I stuck a Bushnell Banner 9-16x50 scope on it and can shoot dime size groups at 100 yards if the wind isnt blowing to hard. at 50 yards the wind doesnt hurt it at all and I can put 5 in a sub group. Ide go savage if it were me. Ive shot the Marlin with just thr iron sights and it shot very good, but I dont think I shot it enough to give any advice on it.

Either one. The Marlin looks better and will be every bit as accurate, so I'd go Marlin. You may not need the trigger upgrade after you shoot it. But like the man said, throw in another $100 and upgrade to a CZ 452 if you can. You'll get about $200 more worth of rifle.

I've got a Marlin Model 917V that I mounted a Bushnell 4x scope on. It's a great little varmint gun. But, Savage also makes good products, so...... I guess I'm not much help.

Go to your local gun shop and grab and a marlin,savage and CZ and see which one fits you bestAll three are great shooters.

I really don't think you can go wrong

with either. I have the Savage 9317BVTS (heavy stainless barell and laminated thumbhole stock) and a friend has the Marlin. His will outshoot mine but not by a lot. Mine is better looking. I also think that the Marlin feels cheaper. The CZ is much nicer than either of the other 2 but is quite a bit more expensive depending on configuration and it is only offered in blue.

For what it's worth the thumbhole stocks on the Savage and Marlin are both made by Boyd's, same outside dimensions, different inletting.

Here is the prob you could run into with the Savage, some will inevitably shoot the 17 grainers poorly, but like the 20 grainers, this is severely limiting on your ammo choice. Plus the 17 grainers have better downrange ballistics and trajectory. The marlins have never had this prob. plus you can just replace the trigger return spring, smooth up the hammer/sear spots, and it will be half as light, right off the bat.

Shot both, ended up with the Savage BTVS with thumbhole stock and heavy barrel. Shoots .5 @ 100yds with 17gr Hornady V-Max. Didnt like the trigger on the marlin at all. Accutrigger on the other hand, well.. you know the story. Only downside to the Savage is that there are no 10rd mags available like there are for the marlin.

Huh, it just so happens I have a Sav 93R17-BV (Accu) as well as a Marl 917V with a Rifle Basix installed. Between these two particular samples, performance seems to be about equal. IMO, the Savage is slightly better built and the bolt action has a more solid feel to it in my gun. The Marlin stock is pretty plain in quality and appearance. The only issue I've had with the Savage is the burrs at the terminus of the lands of the rifling at the crown. They do seem to be even and equal so really haven't affect precision that I can surmise, I think, but still, not a good thing. I am working on de-burring it. No problems with the Marlin.




Both have shot OK at 50 yds for me, my regular range for grouping rimfires (5 rounds per group). They, unfortunately, have a hard time staying under 0.50" at that distance and usually run in the 0.6s and 0.7s.

Granted that these may not represent all .17 HMR 93s and 917s as they are only one sample of each manufacturer. However, with what I have, there are better alternatives if you are looking for precision. The CZ 452s and 453 I have in .17 HMR easy outshoot them and are of, IMO, higher build quaity. Modding the 452 fire control system to dial out the creep can be as low as $15 to as high as about $100.

My 93 light barrel with put a 3 shot group under .5" at 100 yards from the bench with the Bipod. I'd say go Savage.

My walmart special without the accutrigger is frickin awesome.
I checked one rimfire forums,figured out how to lighten the 10LB creepy trigger,and get rid of all the creep. (all I needed was a pair of dikes and a 45acp case,some screwdrivers)
$145 or so.
Dad gave me a old weaver K4 with the fine crosshairs in it.
it will take a squirrels head off at 50 yards easy,never really tried it at longer range,but at that range the little .17 holes are all touching.

17HMR Savage or Marlin

I have a CZ and love it. A friend recently purchased the Savage 93 (don't remember the Mod. #)and I liked it a lot, especially the trigger. All things considered, customer service is important to me and Savage is second to none! If I hadn't already had the CZ, I would have had a tough decision to make in picking it over the Savage.

I have the Marlin and it's a great shooter, but only after a Rifle Basix trigger kit. The factory trigger is among the worst I've ever pulled. I have a Savage with Accutrigger in 30'06 and the trigger is one of the best.

i don't know about the marlin but the savage's acctrigger is great . If you cant get the trigger light enough for your taste cut a loop off the spring and then try it .If it's too light then turn the spring in ..no harm
