Went to buy a S&W 642.....kept handling...looking at it.....put it down...picked it up again. Couldn't feel the love.

Saw this good looking Sig232 in Two Tone near the Smith. I pulled the trigger on this one. My first buy of 09.

Not to poo poo the revolver, but I think you'll be exceptionally pleased with the P232. It's my every day carry gun. It's very accurate, points naturally, and lets you get a full grip on an otherwise small gun.

It's a .380. A large .380 at that.

For the same size and weight, if not LESS, you could have a 9mm or even a .40

.

I'll go ahead and pile on and say IMO the 642 would have been a better choice for personal defense / concealed carry.

I bought a used 642 to see what all the hoopla was about and hated it. The gun itself, performed as advertised but I couldn't hit anything with it. I sold it and bought a Seecamp. (Searching for a Rohrbaugh as we speak.)

Gotta get what is comfortable and what works for you. Thank God there are so many excellent weapons to choose from!

The 642 is a classy piece. I have nothing negative to say about it. I bought the Sig for the night stand. Carrying is not an issue and wanted a gun I could take to the range.
I had Mod 37 years ago. Also had a 230SL. I had the experience of owning/firing both. Both are reliable self protectors. But man....the Two Tone....saw it, liked it, bought it. I over paid slightly. I would have bought a Stainless if it was in stock.

A thread like this will be filled with posts from members that say, "Oh no, you shouldn't have bought that, it's no good, what you really need is... (fill in the blank."

Ignore them. :what:

You bought what YOU liked, and it will work fine for what you have in mind. A .380 bullet that's placed where it should be will stop the biggest and bad'st bad guy you're likely to encounter, and most won't stick around once they find out you're armed - with anything.

That little SIG is a class act piece of machinery, and fully equal to the S&W when it comes to quality.

If the keyboard commandos knew some of the stuff I've depended on to protect my neck over many decades they'd :barf:, and I've known a number of professionals in the business who have done much the same - like a British SAS officer who had a Colt Police Positive chambered is .38 S&W (which isn't any more powerful then a .380 ACP) and in his hands it was absolutely deadly.

So buy what you like and ignore the rest. Where is it written that they know more then you do? ;)

Certainly don't buy what doesn't give you a tingle. Since you stated that your original mission was to buy a 642, I assumed you were specifically looking for a daily concealed-carry weapon, what with the 642 being pretty specialized to that purpose.

Enjoy your new Sig!

I have not run across a J frame I would own.
They do NOT fit my hand... if a pistol doesnt fit... I dont buy it.
I wont own a .380 either :D

Concealed carry was not my intention. Just wanted a small reliable gun for home protection. If I carried it would definitely be the 642. Those snubbies are a small cannon and extremely concealable. That's a Plus.

I think the sig 232 is a gorgeous gun. I love the look and feel. I would not choose one for SD or HD personally becasue there are other guns I prefer for that but the 232 is a nice little gun no doubt. I hope you enjoy your new purchase.

With all due respect, it wasnt' the fault of the GUN.....

One thing to keep in mind, is that if a revolver doesn't "fit," then buy some stocks that DO !

Problem solved.

Six month ago I went in search of a small, carry auto loader. I wasn't sure what I wanted, other than smaller then my Bersa Thunder 45. After looking at several small autos that didn't "feel right, " my wife noticed a small revolver in the case. She suggested I check it out, as it reminded her of the gun her boss carries. That was my first intro to a Smith 642. I loved the feel and fit and got mine for Christmas.

My point being that you need to buy what feels good and fits your hand. It does no good to have what is deemed "correct" by anybody else if it doesn't work for you. It's all personal opinion, even if you are listening to someone who is recognized as the absolute best in the field. If it doesn't work for you, their opinion doesn't matter.

By the way, Parasite, the 642 is a DA only revolver. No hammer to draw back for SA. Maybe you had one of it's cousins?

Well, you bought what you liked best.

Who cares what anyone else might think?

Revolvers aren't for everyone.

When it comes to that, it's probably fair to say that short-barreled, light weight DAO revolvers aren't even for all the folks who like revolvers.

If you can't safely, accurately and effectively use something under the duress, then it might also be fair to consider that it might not be a good handgun to own for the purpose of lawful self defense, either.

The Sig Sauer P232 is fine little blow-back .380 ACP pistol. I've known LE and non-LE (CCW) folks who used them well, were confident in their skills when using them and were thus well served by them.

I wouldn't choose one for my own needs ... and I can shoot diminutive DA/DAO revolvers fairly well ... none of which means that I would ever think a good quality .380 pistol, in the hands of someone who can safely and effectively use it, is a 'bad choice' for that person.

Thanks for sharing. Don't feel you have to justify your choice to anyone other than yourself.

I'm one of those folks who feel the knowledge of when it's lawful and appropriate to use deadly force in self defense is more important than the particular handgun someone may select that potential purpose.

I appreciate what you're saying. I'm just telling what my Saturday was like. I got a nasty case of sticker shock. My S&W37 was $235 in 1980 and my 230SL was $410 in 1987. I might buy the 642 down the line. What discouraged me from buying the Smiths, One had a scratched cylinder,(the 642) the other looked liked like it fired more than a few test rounds.(442)
I had revolvers before. A S&W586, 37, and a Stainless 6" Python. The Python was a beauty. A real piece of work. I'm sorry I didn't keep it and frame it.
Thanks for the replies. THR members usually have great feedback.

There are enough firearms out there to fit everyone's needs -- no need to settle or compromise. If the pistol works better for you, then you done good!

I agree with both sides here. A .380 is hardly an ideal defensive piece. But I don't specifically buy "defensive pieces" myself. I buy what I like, and if - the gods forfend - the balloon goes up, one of them will serve. (Luckily, what I like, mostly, is .45s and military rifles :)).

So you bought what you liked. And it is an awfully nice gun.

Fine firearm. One of the best .380's out there. You made a GREAT choice. Corbon .380's out of that 4 inch barrel are close to the .38's that are fired from the 642. Its fine for self defense.

Because obviously, there's not a ton of manufacturers and options for aftermarket grip adaptability for revolver designs and frame sizes that have been around the block for a few decades.....

To each their own.

On the other hand--the 232 is just plain sexy looking. Got pics of yours?

I have tried them with a multitude of grips.
Sometimes guns just dont fit.
or... maybe I just like a better fit than most... who knows.
