I don't know where else to post this but I have heard of a lot of pirate attacks lately on cruise ships especially near Somalia. Obviously a cruise ship is going to have a difficult time outrunning the speedboats that modern pirates use, do cruise ships have a armory or keep any firearms on board? Do they use security or anything?

On television I saw a bit about a British company offering to place a small security team on board ships. I think that included small firearms and sonic cannons.

What are LRAD's?

Do any of the ships carry small arms? Does any security on cruise ship carry anything like handguns or do they keep a storage of rifles if the ship is raided?

Before 9-11, they had several 12 ga skeet guns on board. You used to be able to shoot clay pigons off the stern.

Perfect if the ship is being attacked by a flock of seagulls

maritime law saws commercial vessels can't be armed as far as I understand it, hence why pirates can hijack them with little problem.

Some vessels will be equipped with Acoustic systems, water cannon or tear gas, but beyond that, no actual weapons per se.

I don't know what international maritime law says, but I was under the impression that the vast majority if seaports do not allow weapons on board ships in their harbor which is why ships can't carry them. I could be wrong but that is what I recall.

A pirate interviewed by Newsweek said they would attempt to sink you with an RPG if you fail to surrender. Don't know if that's possible on a bigger ship but surrender or sink aren't great options.

You can have weapons on a private boat or yacht though, right?

I found this on private yachts

Guns on the High Seas

What with piracy on the increase, the Yacht-set are thinking about sailing with guns. From the Triton:

Even though no flag state allows firearms onboard their megayachts, nearly everyone at The Triton 's recent Connection seminar on piracy wanted to know if having one would keep pirates off their boats.

While the panel discussion on piracy and security at sea on April 5 could have taken one of any number of veins – from complying with the ISPS code to dealing with vendors – most in the audience of more than 50 had questions about guns.

“If they are going to confiscate your weapons or arrest you, isn't it better to hide them?”

“What authority do they have to come after you if you kill someone?”

The experts on the panel assembled at Bluewater Books & Charts in Ft. Lauderdale were cautious to offer answers, though, since weapons are illegal to carry on board yachts in most places.

The conversation began in a general way, noting that there have been no recent piracy attacks on yachts in the areas they frequent most – the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and along the U.S. coasts.

“It's all about risk assessment,” said Stephan Mort, vice president of maritime operations at Wright Maritime Group in Ft. Lauderdale . “No flag says you can carry a weapon. If you are going to carry a gun, know the local laws where you are traveling. Weapons just add another risk to the situation.”

[...]

[Warned one delivery captain,] “If you are going to carry them, you have to be prepared to fire them,” he said. “And if you are going to fire at one of the bad guys, you have to be prepared to finish what you started, because his son there on the boat with him will surely tell the police that his father was approaching the yacht for some food or some ropes. So if that son is a 16-year-old kid, are you prepared to reload and shoot him? There will be consequences for what you do.”

To be honest, I have no idea what some of these terms are, such as "no flag state" and I have no intention (since I get off from work in 10 minutes) of researching all this but I thought it was interesting. Even on the high seas it seems you can't get away from mutants!"

So you can't even carry a gun on your own boat? That's rediculous.

Oh I also found this about carnival cruise lines.

But he also noted that attacks on cruise ships are rare - this was the first since Palestinian terrorists hijacked the Achille Lauro in the Mediterranean in 1985 and killed a wheelchair-bound American.

Cruise lines are reluctant to talk about their specific security plans, fearing that the information could help those willing to pounce on ships. Crye said companies are permitted to arm their crews, but he wouldn't say if they did.

Kenneth Bissonnette, staff manager for surveillance and security at Carnival Cruise Lines, told The Associated Press in March 2004 that security personnel for the world's largest cruise line didn't carry firearms, but had defenses like pepper spray. He said the company's security staff recruited heavily among Gurkhas, elite Nepalese soldiers renowned for their fearlessness.

It looks to me when they are referring to flags or flag states they are simply referring to a sovereign nation.

"The ship took evasive maneuvers and accelerated to its full speed of 23 knots or 27 mph. One of the smaller craft closed to within 300 yards and fired eight rifle shots at the cruise ship, he said, but the ship was able to pull away. "

How did they get away from a small vessle at 27MPH? Were the pirates using canoes?

Believe it or not, on the open ocean, most ocean-going vessels will be able to outrun small speedboats if given long enough. Unlike a little speedboat, a big cruise ship can keep maximum speed in sea conditions rough enough to bounce a little speedboat around. That, and the big ship has a lot more fuel to burn in an engine designed for long periods of continuous operation.

This is why pirates rely on surprise, intimidation, and a good deal of luck.

I want to see a pirate fire an RPG standing in a little single engine vhull boat... and fall into the shark infested waters....

Not a problem actually as RPG's have no kick. It's a rocket and all the back blast just exits the rear of the weapon. It's one heck of a concussion though.

i'd love to get a job as an armed guard on a cruise ship.just set me up near the top of the ship with a barrett & some suntan lotion.this would be the pirates reaction; :what:...

+1
Man what a job that would be!!!!!!

I still think the crews of the cargo ships work with the pirates, then split the ransom if all goes to plan.

Just my $.02

Ships can carry approved weapons depending on their flag and their owners/operators. Most foreign flag vessels I boarded only had flare guns. Military Sealift Command vessels do have a compliment of small arms such as the 9mm, 12 ga. pump and m14 rifle. This was right after 9/11 and I do not know if any changes were made.

Like cane said they used to have AHSA specials, ever seen Speed 2? It's on a cruise ship and the guy uses one of the shotguns to fight back.

The last article I read advised against ships arming themselves. They implied the pirates are too well armed and too many in numbers. They said the pirates would win any firefight and it would just make them mad enough to kill everyone.

I also heard there are Russian gunboats patrolling off the Somali coast.

I agree with the other poster who advised to stay off cruise ships going anywhere near Somalia.
