CZ-75 Questions

The 75BD models are a fine choice.
A very safe gun for new shooters or those folks not comfortable with
cocked and locked. The P-01 and PCR are also options.

Some mags like 75B Pro-mags would not fit in my Pre-B models.

The 75 (not B) can use true "factory" mags -- bought directly from CZ. And that's about it. 95% of the after-market mags made for the B models or the CZ clones (Baby Eagle, Witness, ATs, Jerichos, etc.) will NOT work in a pre-B gun.

The older style mags have more taper at the top; the newer non-factory mags tend to be more squared-off at the top of the front of the mag tube and just don't work right. They tend to drag on the trigger bar when they fit in the tube at all.

I've got a bunch of factory 10-rounders that work fine in my pre-B, and some factory (or similar) hi-caps. I have many other CZ-type mags that work well in newer CZ, but not in my pre-B.

If you've got a pre-B and need mags, take it with you to a gun show, and try the mags out before you buy. If they fit in the mag well, and the trigger works properly, you'll almost certainly be able to make the mags work.

(Note: the mag release in CZ clones tend to be set a bit lower in the grip than do CZs -- so when you use a "clone" mag in a CZ, the mag sometimes gets pushed up against hte underside of the slide -- not letting it function properly. Enlarging the top of the mag release notch with a flat file generally fixes that problem.)

Updated Info

I checked out the pistol today, and it's not what I thought.

The rollmark on the slide was CZ-75, not CZ-75B, and the box and paperwork each indicated that these pistols are -75s, not -75Bs. The importer was A.A.L, or something along those lines, in Pennsylvania, and it was etched/rollmarked on the left front of the frame. There was a circle w/94, not 96, behind the ejector.

Additionally, I can get one of these pistols new in the box, in the plastic and shipping grease, with one preban magazine, for about $380. I was looking at the one in the case and asked the dealer what they came with, at which point he brought out a new one to make sure it had the original equipment with it. I'm guessing it would end up being about $400 out the door with taxes.

Sounds like a military CZ-75 based upon what little I know. Can anyone explain the difference between a CZ-75 and -75B, and what the firing pin link does, or better yet give me a link? I couldn't find anything with a quick viewing of CZForum.

That was good news AND bad news.

The Good:

A pre-B 75 (which is what you describe) is considered by some to be a superior gun to the 75B. I have both, and think it a toss up.

The principal difference is that the pre-B does not have the firing pin block and, as a consequence, a slightly better trigger. They generally command a higher price than the "B" models.

The Bad:

A few obscure parts may be hard to come by, and easily finding mags to fit will be a problem.

This is NOT a "military" version of the CZ; the military CZ were all "B" models, made in '96. This one is what is called a "transitional" with some of the same features as a B, but keeping some older features.

Check it again: if there's no roll pin in the rear of the slide in the serrations, it does not have the firing pin block. If it doesn't, try the trigger. That may help you decide. The "B" models should not be dry-fired excessively, as the firing pin retention roll pin can be broken (easy replacement from a hardware store, however.) The pre-B models don't have it.

About $400, out the door is a good price, a hair on the lower-than-average side. But you may still be happier with a NEW "B" model with a good warranty.

What Walt said

I have both models as pictured above.

The 75B will be easier to find mag's for, change out sights (if you are ever interested), and getting parts and/or service directly from CZ-USA is a benefit.

The 75B is probably a better "first CZ-75".

OTH...I love shooting the Transitional CZ-75...trigger is better, and beyond factory mag's, I can use these magazines with it (assuming careful insertion).

Yes. But you've got to shop around.

I've picked up 5-6 new or nearly new ones from other CZ owners by checking the CLASSIFIED area of the CZ Forum. You can find them at CDNN, from time to time, as well. (They don't always have them in stock, however.)

Buying them directly from CZ isn't that much higher, for that matter.
