CZ or Savage...What one would you get?

I was thinking about picking up a heavy barreled .308 in order to take advantage of the cheap .308 ammo. My requirements are a bolt. I have it mainly narrowed down between these brands but am open to others. What can you all tell me about these?

The CZ has nicer fit/finish.

The CZ has a nicer trigger if you like single set triggers.

The CZ's bolt lift is high, requiring you to get real high rings. This isn't a problem if you were going to put a huge scope on your gun anyway.

The Savage will have more aftermarket parts and you can rebarrel it yourself.

There are lots of other differences.
Someone with first hand experiences with these two brands will give yo more info.

Have you looked at Tikka T3's?
I have a T3 Lite in .308 and it prints small groups, consistent half inch groups at 100 yards with factory match ammo.
Their T3 Varmints are even more accurate.

The standard Savage plastic stock is pittiful and will need to be replaced if. The CZ shouldn't need a change. The Savage will have more sniper/target/varmit aftermarket. Either are real values.

Both seem to be nice choices, the Savage has a more popular following among precision shooters than the CZ. That may or may not amount to much though.

I do question the point of getting a heavy barreled rifle for use with cheap ammunition. Ammunition is more of a limiting factor to accuracy than the weight of a barrel.

looking at your sig it seems that you are probably the most qualified person here to make the decision since you own examples from both factories.

It's always nice to be able to find cheap ammo, but it doesn;t mean you'll always have to shoot cheap ammo

If you want stainless, I don't think CZ makes one. Otherwise, it's a toss up, as long as the Savage has an accutrigger.

If I recall correctly, the CZ is a Mauser-style controlled-feed action and the Savage is a push-feed - if that matters to to ya one way or another.

I suspect that the CZ, although a bargain for what you get, will still be several hundred dollars more than the Savage.

CZ-527's can be had for just about $400-450, (last years prices at the Raleigh Gun Show). Dicks Sporting Goods has Savages for sale for about $330 with a cheap scope, don't know if they have AccuTriggers.

I like the workmanship and strenth of the CZ better than the Savage. I like the design of the Tikka over the Savage. I got a CZ 550 Varmit Laminated and love it but I'm selling it right now to try and drum up some cash for an AR project I've had on hold for over a year.

I do have familarity with the CZ centerfire rifle line and have been pretty impressed with my 550 American. I have been reading quite a bit about the accuracy of the Savage rifles. Tikka seems to get some good praise aswell. I am buying my brother a Savage .308 for Xmas and need something for myself, I just can't stand the idea of him having a rifle in a caliber that I don't have Stainless isn't really that big of deal for me. I will have to find some nice folks around these here parts and see if they will let me shoot them. Most people seem to be packin Remington's round here though. Thanks again for the advice and keep it coming.

No experience with the CZ, but understand they are very respectable rifles.

Own two of those ugly Savage rifles and couldn't be happier with them. In fact, am contemplating trading a cantankerous mod. 70 300 Win Mag. off for another Savage, and I have been a Mod. 70 fan for more years than I care to admit.

My first Savage was a mod. 112 in 338 Win Mag, pre accutrigger. The prior owner had worked on the trigger and it is as good as any of my Mod. 70's. Shoots 5/8" groups @ 100 yds any day I do my part w/225 gr. accubonds. (Beats heck out of the 1.5 moa groups I get from the above mentioned 300 WM and that only after MUCH "tweaking".)

My latest is a Mod. 10FP in 223 Rem. and the accutriger came set at 1.5# from factory and shoots sub moa, out of the box, with anything I have put through it so far. Just started playing w/handloads and so far have not improved on WW 53 gr. hp factory loads, but am sure I can with a little more time.

Both my rifles have that "pitiful" plastic stock and, while I have to agree that they are not much to look at, all I can say is pretty is as pretty does. In fact, I rather like the homely stocks as I can enjoy using them and not worry about a ding or four. My rifles are tools that are used 8 months out of the year, not show guns and accuracy/dependability are paramount to me.

Doubt that you would go wrong with either the CZ or the Savage, depends on what you are looking for in a rifle.

CZ...But I'm very biased. I have one of their .223 varmint laminates that amazes me. I was out testing loads yesterday and found a great one that put 5 into .4" at 100, so I came back to the range today and got a .3" group. That's straight out of the factory folks! I've can take pics of the targets for all you naysayers if you want.

This has been some excellent information. I prolly won't be getting a Savage due to the fact that I want something different than what I am buying my brother. It will prolly be a choice between the CZ and the Tikka. The CZ has that sweet Set trigger and seeing how this will mainly be a paper punching rig that will play in it's favor. So many rifles, so little time.....

Hunt around and find a Howa. I think you will be pleased and beat the price on bothe the Savage or the CZ. THie Howa HB 308 is a real nice shooter.

All I have really read about the Howa is that they are Japanese and they manufacture the Wally World Weatherbys. Anybody else have any more information about Howa?

Accuracy of the Howa 1500's is typical of mass produced sporter weight guns like the Rem 700 ADL and Win 70. Accuracy is usually 1.5MOA.
The Howa 1500 and Weatherby Vanguard are essentially the same barreled action, but the Weatherbys supposedly have slightly better quality control.
I read a magazine test article of the Howa 1500 Varminter, It shot pretty well (better than 1MOA), but slightly behind other low cost heavy barrel rigs (ie Savage).

They use the same scope base as Rem 700's.

Other than that they're your basic bolt action rifle, push feed, two locking lugs, vented bolt bodies in case of a primer rupture.

The only thing the Howa has going for it is cost, but even that isn't a big advantage when you can get a Savage or a Vanguard.
I saw Vanguards at Walmart on sale for $300.
For the price of a Howa 1500 Varminter you can get a Tikka T3 Varmint, nicer fit/finish and a written accuracy guarantee or a Savage heavy barrel.

If you are getting the Savage for you brother then by all means I would say to get the CZ. I hate having the same guns as my friends and family, no variety.
